It's also a magnet for those wanting their big day overseas. According to WedMeGood’s Destination Wedding Report 2026, Sri Lanka has emerged as one of the fastest-growing overseas wedding spots, owing to several factors—proximity, luxury hospitality and experience-led celebrations.
The figures affirm what has been felt for a while now—for India’s eager wedding jetsetters, SL is not just an alternative anymore. India remains its largest source market, accounting for 31% of total arrivals in April 2026, per the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). And the shift is welcome in wedding industry circles.
Says Neelabh Kapoor, Experiential Weddings by Studio Neelabh, “We're definitely seeing a huge rise in multi-day weddings in Sri Lanka and I've shot several there over the last year. Its greatest draws being accessibility from India and the rest of Asia, topography and luxury hospitality with varied personalised experiences. I feel that there are places you work in, and there are places that work on you. Sri Lanka has quietly become the second kind for me. Sri Lanka doesn't announce itself the way some destinations do. It reveals itself slowly — in the quiet between the waves, in the warmth of a stranger's greeting.”
He adds, "Sri Lanka has been waiting for a certain kind of attention. What makes the island different from other markets you've worked in is that elsewhere, we often build meaning into a place. Here, the meaning is already woven into the soil, the coastline, the way people move through their days. Our work isn't to invent a story — it's to have the humility to step back and let the island's own voice come through clearly. We have been seeing couples treat Sri Lanka less like an exotic add-on and more like the first choice."
The choices are diverse. You can start with a welcome dinner in Bentota, choose to have a mehendi at a colonial mansion in Galle, give guests a safari trail in Yala and host your reception in a beautiful tea plantation in Nuwara Eliya!
Logistically, Sri Lanka holds a strong advantage for wedding groups. For one, travel time drops dramatically. Compared to a 4-hour flight to Thailand or the Maldives, and up to 7 hours to Bali, Sri Lanka is a quick 1.5 to 3-hour journey. Shares Karteek Sharma, director and co-founder, Ripple Events and Hospitality, “A major factor driving its demand is logistical ease. Being just a short flight from major Indian hubs makes procurement and planning remarkably smooth compared to destinations further abroad. Furthermore, the local hospitality industry is deeply attuned to the nuances of Indian celebrations. The warm, accommodating locals make it easy to recreate the vibrant energy of home—whether that means arranging lively dholwalas or serving authentic Indian cuisine with exact spice profiles that are often hard to replicate internationally.”
Of course, more ease equals more footfalls and this has a domino effect on revenue build for other high-spending segments—hospitality, airlines, event planners, photographers, wedding entertainers and more.
The 1,600 km tropical coastline is dotted with beach villas and new and upgraded luxury properties that are going all out to woo the luxury destination wedding goer with highly personalised journeys. Says Katerina Dixon, AVP Regional Marketing and Corporate Communications, Shangri-La Group, “Across Shangri-La Colombo and Shangri-La Hambantota, we have seen an estimated 15% year-on-year increase in interest from Indian couples and families considering Sri Lanka for destination weddings."
She adds, "At Shangri-La Hambantota alone, we hosted 10 full-resort wedding buyouts last year on top of wedding related social events, reflecting growing demand for private, multi-day celebrations. The celebrations are designed as multi-day resort experiences, including beachside ceremonies, welcome dinners, poolside functions, traditional mehendi and sangeet celebrations, gala receptions and farewell brunches. Couples can also incorporate local experiences such as Sri Lankan cultural performances, wellness treatments, golf, artisan-led activities and curated excursions.”
The beautiful backdrop that the country is, makes it a wedding photo and videographer’s delight.
Says Manvi Gandotra, Founder, 1Plus1 Studio, "Sri Lanka is one of those rare destinations that offers incredible visual diversity within a few hours of travel. You have colonial architecture, lush tea estates, pristine beaches, tropical forests, dramatic cliffs, and luxury resorts—all in one country. That means every event of a wedding can have a completely different visual identity without guests spending hours in transit."
She adds, 'From a photography perspective, it's a dream because the landscapes never overpower the couple—they complement the story. The light is beautiful throughout the day, the greenery feels timeless, and the intimate scale of many venues allows us to create photographs that feel cinematic yet deeply personal."
Sharma, who has recently executed two of the largest, high-profile weddings at this ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, says he has seen firsthand how this island nation perfectly blends luxury with cultural familiarity. In the second wedding, his team took on a challenge at Port City Colombo—a breathtaking expanse of reclaimed land extending off the city's coast, where an empty stretch of sand was transformed into a custom-built convention venue. “This monumental setup housed three distinct stages, a grand dining area, a massive satellite kitchen, and a full-scale production warehouse. Despite the sheer scale of the build, the host country’s infrastructure and local officials were incredibly supportive, ensuring a seamless execution,” he says.
To conclude a monumental wedding, you need an afterparty for the ages. He adds, “We hosted an unreal, high-energy finale at AHASA, the stunning sky bridge venue located at the ITC Ratnadipa. Suspended 100 meters in the air on the 29th floor, AHASA offers an absolute altitude that instantly shifts the energy of the night. Guests partied and relaxed against a jaw-dropping, 360-degree panoramic view of the illuminated Sri Lankan capital and the dark, rhythmic expanse of the ocean. It provided a glamorous, literal "top-of-the-world" feeling that served as the ultimate crescendo to an unforgettable weekend.”
The recent Middle East conflict has seen an impact on several traditional Gulf wedding venues and this has led to a boost in traffic to Sri Lanka, adds Kapoor. “While there has been disruption and so many changes in venues, Indian wedding arrivals have been unaffected in this airspace. The experiential resorts are embracing destination wedding travellers with the government also stepping in to actively promote weddings hand-in-hand with luxury tourism.”
