What makes a wedding date ‘perfect’? Like most of the things related to wedding planning, it comes down to several important factors. While these could range from the availability of your dream wedding venue or the perfect season to have a beach wedding, most cultures around the world rely on factors like astrology or numerology to arrive at a date.

In Hindu cultures, the muhurat (specific time and dates decided by planetary alignments) is decided by consulting a person’s birth chart and the movements of planets. Numerology and superstitious beliefs around numbers, too, play a huge role in deciding the way people choose to get married. For instance, in some East Asian cultures, it’s considered unlucky to get married because it sounds like the Chinese word for ‘death’.

From lucky numbers to lunar cycles, every culture has its own formula for choosing auspicious dates. Here's a guide to help you pick the best date for your wedding in 2025…

Looking at the cosmos can be a good way to determine the right wedding date for you and your partner. Here are a few days that could be auspicious for a wedding, according to commonly held beliefs of astrology:

    Spring Equinox

This marks the beginning of the spring season and is considered to be a great time for fresh starts. This will occur on 20 March 2025.

    Summer Solstice

The beginning of the Cancer season signals positive energy being infused in the family sector, which makes this an auspicious time for weddings. This will occur on 21 June 2025.

    Supermoons

This time is considered to be supercharged with positive energy and it’s said that deep connections can be forged during this period. There will be three supermoons in 2025: 7 October, 5 November, 4 December.

    Full Moon

According to astrology, full moons can be a time when your connection with your partner is intensified. It also makes for a great background for photographs, so that’s an added bonus! The dates for full moons in 2025 are: 13 January, 12 February, 14 March, 13 April, 12 May, 11 June, 10 July, 9 August, 7 September. The full moons occurring from October to December are going to be Supermoons.

Numerologically speaking, the year 2025 is a lucky year for weddings as its numerological value (2+0+2+5=9) symbolises completion and fulfilment. The number 8 is also considered to be auspicious in numerology as it represents success and abundance. This is why the eighth of August is a very important date, with many calling it the Lion’s Gate Portal (as it’s in the sign of Leo). The time is supposed to be powerful for manifesting dreams and desires and could prove to be a good day to set upon an adventure like marriage too. It’s also an important date, according to the Chinese Zodiac calendar.

In Islam, there aren’t any specific dates that are considered lucky for a wedding. However, some Muslim people consider getting married during the month of Muharram (Islamic New Year) inauspicious. Many people choose to get married in the month of Shawwal (the 10th month of the Islamic calendar) as it’s sunnah (a practice followed by Prophet Muhammad PBUH). This is the month that immediately follows the month of Ramadan, so in 2025 it will begin on 31 March and last till 28 April (this can vary slightly depending on the moon).

In Hindu culture, kundalis(birth charts) hold special significance in deciding major aspects of a person’s life. “A favourable match is thought to bring harmony, reduce the likelihood of conflicts, and ensure a happy married life,” says spiritual healer and coach Dr Priya Kaul. Aside from matching kundalis, other factors can help determine wedding dates that could be suitable for the couple.

Factors that determine a date's auspiciousness for weddings in Hindu culture

    Tithi (Lunar Day)

“Specific lunar days are deemed more favourable for weddings, with some days considered highly auspicious (like Shukla Paksha, the 15-day period after a new moon and ends on a full moon),” says Dr Kaul.

    Nakshatras

The position of the moon in certain nakshatras (or constellations) can significantly influence the selection of a wedding date, as some stars are considered more beneficial than others.

    Day of the week

“Specific days, such as Friday and Sunday, are often regarded as favourable for weddings, while certain other days may be avoided,” advises Dr Kaul.

    Chandra lagna

“The couple's moon signs and their current position can play a role in determining a harmonious date,” she says.

While Christians tend to avoid getting married during the period of Lent, there are other significant dates in a Christian calendar that could prove to be an auspicious wedding date:

    Advent

This is the season where people gear up to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. The celebratory time makes for the perfect setting for a Winter wedding. The dates differ every year and it starts on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day and ends on Christmas Eve. In 2025, Advent is from 30 November to 24 December.

    Epiphany

This is one of the first holidays of the year for Christians. It comes on the heels of Christmas and is also considered a positive and auspicious time to get married. The dates can vary every year and in 2025, it will fall on 6 January 2025.

In the end, what date you settle on depends on you and your partner’s beliefs. It will also be helpful if you consult your astrologist to determine which of these auspicious dates and periods specifically suit you and your partner.
