Celebrity weddings are iconic for several reasons. Whether it’s Anushka Sharma’s blush pink lehenga that set off the trend of opting for pastels for the main ceremony or Kiara Advani’s viral bridal entry, these weddings can serve as inspiration for soon-to-be-newlyweds.
Aside from couture and candid photographs, some of these iconic weddings can also be credited for inspiring people to personalise their wedding ceremonies and make them their own. Take, for instance, Dia Mirza opting to have a female priestess for her wedding or Rajkummar Rao flipping the rule book and having Patralekhaa apply sindoor to his forehead.

The Internet became abuzz with opinions (as it does) when Aamir Khan’s son-in-law Nupur Shikare ditched the traditional baraat, and the conventional sherwani, to run to the wedding venue in a vest and shorts combo. Nupur, a fitness trainer, later revealed that he used to run from his residence in Santacruz to Ira Khan’s place near Bandra and the route was special for him. This is why he opted to run to the wedding venue instead of opting for a grand procession.
Traditionally, in Hindu weddings, a male priest with a janeu (the sacred thread) always performs the wedding festivities. But Dia Mirza opted for a female priestess, an aunt of her childhood friend, to perform her wedding rituals to add a personal touch to one of the most special days of her life. She also ditched the Kanyadaan ritual performed during the wedding ceremony, which means giving away the bride to the groom. In an Instagram post, Dia revealed the reason behind not performing the ritual. She explained that she believed women are not synonymous with commodities and should not be given away or donated to a particular person during marriage. More power to her!.
Rajkummar Rao set a new precedent for grooms when he urged his then-fiancée Patralekhaa to apply sindoor on his forehead during the wedding ceremony. Later in an interview with a newspaper, the actor explained that this was an “impulsive” act and that he was glad it resonated with people. He also stated that he believes in equality and that marriage is between two people and not just for the woman.
When Alia and Ranbir tied the knot at their Mumbai residence, the couple eschewed the traditional seven pheras in favour of focussing on the four that were meaningful for them. Instead of taking the saptapadi (the sacred seven pheras), the couple only performed the first four that promise well-being, nourishment, blissful family life and wealth. They left out the three that didn’t align with their value system.
While (pre-heartbreak) Carrie Bradshaw might have gone big and set her eyes on a grand Vivienne Westwood gown for her wedding, certified fashion, and pop culture, icon Sarah Jessica Parker’s choice of wedding dress was decidedly more simple. Back in 1997, the actress chose a simple black ruffled Morgane Le Fay dress to pull off the secret wedding ceremony she had planned with her fiancé Matthew Broderick. The dress, like many of SJP’s outfits, became an inspiration for brides who wanted unconventional colour palettes for their wedding.
