Alia Bhatt Will Not Put Away Her Wedding Clothes In Storage, Thank You

The actress is walking the walk for sustainable fashion…

When designer Manish Malhotra invited the who’s who of the industry to kick off Diwali festivities in style recently, it was only to be expected that the guests turned up dressed to the nines. And they didn’t disappoint! But amidst all the shiny sequinned saris and ornately embroidered kurtas, Alia Bhatt’s lehenga stood out for all the right reasons.

The Jigra actress chose to re-wear the outfit she wore for her mehndi ceremony back in 2022 to the party. The red patchwork lehenga set was designed by Manish Malhotra using 180 different textile swatches, intricately pieced together using Kashmiri and Chikankari thread work by Mijwan artisans.

For the latest red carpet look, Alia brought back the gorgeous outfit and styled it with her hair pulled back in an updo and statement earrings as an accessory.

This is not the first time the actress has made a case for repeating her bridal outfits. Back in 2023, when Alia was presented with the National Award for her performance in Gangubai Kathiawadi, she decided to break out her wedding sari.

The actress repurposed the white and gold Sabyasachi sari she had worn during the ceremony for another momentous occasion in her life. Alia had simply declared at the time, “What’s special once can be special again. And again…” and we cannot agree more wholeheartedly.

With formidable teams of stylists and consultants in their corner, celebrities seem to have an endless supply of new and fresh-off-the-runway looks. However, it is becoming increasingly normalised for A-listers to wear the title of ‘Outfit Repeaters’ proudly.

Kate Middleton is a huge believer in recycling her looks, from formal dress coats to red carpet-gowns.

Celebrities like Kate Moss, Meghan Markle, Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber, Victoria Beckham, and Elizabeth Banks are also a part of the club.

Closer to home, the industry newbies have embraced the trend of repeating outfits seamlessly. Janhvi Kapoor can often be seen re-wearing outfits for her off-duty looks and bringing out some of her mother Sridevi’s iconic looks for her red carpet appearances occasionally. For her wedding recently, Sonakshi Sinha opted to wear her mother’s bridal sari, ditching the usual practice of a custom designer look.

Sonam Kapoor has always been a pioneer when it comes to fashion trends in India, so to nobody’s surprise, she has been spotted on multiple occasions wearing outfits she had worn previously. In an interview withManifest, she also confessed that she regularly dips into her mother’s jewellery box for accessories for her looks.

Conscious consumption has become a major topic of conversation among fashion enthusiasts around the world over the past few years. The practice of wearing expensive and labour-intensive couture more than once (there shouldn't be a limit!) needs to be normalised. So brides, if you’re reading this, take cues from Alia Bhatt, and all these other stylish celebrities, and don’t put away your wedding outfits in the storage just yet!

For Manifest to become one of Cambridge Dictionary's most viewed words of 2024 — 1,30,000 hits and counting — it means some of us must have Googled it at least once. I know, I hit that search button over and over again
because each time I looked at it, I saw a new meaning.

Putting together a homegrown title at a time when the demise of print has been long announced may seem surprising...
...but it has long been a dream of mine to give India a magazine it deserves. A magazine that is the country.

And nothing, absolutely nothing, represents India more than our weddings. It is a time when families are brought together. Traditions come alive as they are adapted to each couple's beliefs. And lives are joined in a way that the romantic in me still enjoys.
