It’s that time of the year again. Fashion enthusiasts and celebrity watchers are rolling up their sleeves and preparing for the descent of the stars on the Met Gala red carpet.

Inarguably one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year, the Met Gala this year will be even more exciting than any in the recent past.

In a series of posts by the Instagram account Diet Sabya, Shah Rukh Khan is all set to make his Met Gala debut in collaboration with Sabyasachi. Shah Rukh Khan might be joined by Diljit Dosanjh on the red carpet, according to reports.

This year’s theme, ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style’, which is inspired by Dr Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves To Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, features menswear for the first time in decades. If the rumours are true, then we can’t wait to see what SRK and Diljit, two of the biggest male celebrities in the country at the moment, bring to the red carpet.

Indian celebrities have been making their mark on the Met Gala red carpet for years. Whether it’s Priyanka Chopra’s 2017 debut with Ralph Lauren or Alia Bhatt’s collaboration with Sabyasachi for last year’s red carpet, Indian celebrities have found themselves in Best Dressed lists at the Met Gala many times in the past.

Here are a few of our favourite Met Gala red carpet looks over the years by Indian celebrities…

When it comes to Met Gala looks, Alia is two for two. For her red carpet debut in 2023, the actress collaborated with Prabal Gurung. The designer created a custom beaded gown inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s bridal look for Chanel’s 1992 F/W collection.

Priyanka Chopra in Ralph Lauren

Priyanka Chopra’s Met Gala debut in 2017 was major for many reasons. Not only was it the first time a mainstream Bollywood celebrity was making an appearance on the prestigious international red carpet, but it was also the kickstart of Priyanka’s relationship with Nick Jonas. The two repped Ralph Lauren at the event, with Priyanka’s trench coat-inspired ensemble inspiring accolades and memes in equal measures.

Deepika Padukone in Zac Posen

Deepika Padukone’s 2019 appearance at the Met Gala was a departure from her preference to stick to safe and classic silhouettes and beauty looks. Adhering to the year’s theme of ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’, designer Zac Posen crafted a stunning strapless gown with 3d details. Going Barbiecore before it was even a thing, Deepika paired the gown with an extravagantly high ponytail and bold lips.

Everyone, from Mumbai to Manhattan, went ga ga over Mona Patel’s Met Gala debut in 2024. The entrepreneur and philanthropist understood the assignment at the Met Gala that year with her off-shoulder, body-hugging Iris van Herpen gown. What took our breath away were the fluttering 3d butterflies on her sleeves, a classic van Herpen signature.

Isha Ambani has had several notable Met Gala looks over the years, but her Rahul Mishra gown from 2024 has a special place in our hearts. A fervent environmental conservationist, Isha Ambani, collaborated with Rahul Mishra for a custom gown that utilised materials from the designer’s previous collections. She sought to platform the artisans and craftsmen of India at the event, which has the eyes of the world on it.
