Dua Lipa Might Have Ushered In A New Era Of The Bridal Power Suit
The skirt suit just had its long-overdue moment
Congratulations are in order for Dua Lipa and Callum Turner. The couple just tied the knot in an intimate civil wedding ceremony in London. And while their wedding nuptials might have been quiet and low-key, their sartorial choices made all the noise.
While Callum wore a navy blue Ferragamo suit, Dua chose to take the road less taken as she ditched the traditional wedding dress for a sharp skirt suit. Her custom ivory suit by Schiparelli featured a tailored-to-perfection jacket which gets cinched at the waist before flaring out ever so lightly at the hips. Her jacket, which was reminiscent of Christian Dior’s bar jacket, had a notched collar, and Schiaparelli’s signature gold bijoux buttons, which was a rather unpredictable, quirky touch to an otherwise-classic look. The jacket was paired with a calf-length skirt with a high low hemline. Her accessories were all about embracing the classics. For the jewellery, she wore a Bvlgari Serpenti necklace made with white gold and diamonds. For the shoes, she wore a pair of matching pumps from Christian Louboutin. She added another touch of elegance with a matching hat from Stephen Jones, and a pair of gloves. Everything about the look was classic, poised, and sophisticated.
Dua’s approach to her wedding look was rather unconventional. While wearing a gown as a bride might not exactly be an unsaid rule, it is the traditional route that most brides take. The last time we saw a memorable bridal skirt suit look was in 1971, when Bianca Jagger wore a skirt suit from Yves Saint Laurent for her wedding. Interestingly, Bianca also paired her suit with a hat, which could be the reason why everyone is drawing parallels between the two looks.
While the bridal suit might not have been in conversation for the past few decades, when a mainstream pop culture icon decides to steer the conversation, the trend is bound to pick up.
