There’s nobody like Sonam Kapoor. From her choices of roles to play onscreen to her fashion, the actress is a class apart from her contemporaries. Speaking of the latter, Sonam has cemented her status as a bona fide fashion icon for ages.

Whether it’s an international red carpet, like the Cannes Film Festival, or the front row at fashion weeks in Milan or Paris, the actress never fails to wow us with her style. One thing that sets her style apart is her skilful use of jewellery to make a statement.

“Jewellery is my favourite accessory and I wear jewellery with almost every look,” says Sonam, as we catch up with her following the launch of Zoya’s My Embrace collection, “I love statement pieces that make a bold impression but I also appreciate minimal, intricate designs that add a touch of elegance. It really depends on the occasion, how I’m feeling that day and the story I want to tell with the look.”

The actress was named the brand ambassador for Zoya, the luxury diamond boutique from the House of Tata, recently. “Zoya and I share a long history and a mutual love for artistry and fine craftsmanship. Zoya’s jewellery pieces are not just accessories; they are meaningful symbols of wearable art that celebrate women authentically being themselves,” she says, about their collaboration.

The exquisite craftsmanship of Zoya’s pieces was something that endeared Sonam to the brand from the get-go. “When buying jewellery, I look for pieces that resonate with my personal style and story. Craftsmanship and quality are also very important to me. I like to invest in timeless pieces that I can cherish for years. It’s also essential that the jewellery aligns with my values and aesthetics. That’s the foundation of my association with Zoya.”

Sonam confesses that some of the most cherished pieces in her jewellery collection are the ones that belonged to her mother and grandmother. “One of my favourite pieces is a necklace my mother gifted me for my wedding - it was a necklace that my father had given her for her fiftieth birthday and so it’s very special. I like pieces that tell a story.” The love for heirloom pieces stems from some of her earliest interactions with jewellery, “Some of my earliest memories of jewellery are from watching my mother getting ready for events. She has a stunning collection of jewellery, a lot of it she has designed herself. My sister Rhea and I have inherited this love and appreciation for jewellery from her.”

The actress regularly dips into her mother Sunita Kapoor’s collection of jewellery to accessorise her looks. ForAnant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’spre-wedding festivities in Jamnagar, Sonam paired her Namza Couture outfit with a diamond-encrusted necklace, bold statement rings and bracelets, and pearl earrings from her mother’s jewellery box. For her appearance on the 2014 Cannes Film Festival red carpet, the actress’ Anamika Khanna ensemble was elevated with a choker belonging to her mother.

Not only this, Sonam chose to wear her mother’s jewellery for one of her pre-wedding ceremonies too. She is only too happy to dispense advice on whether brides-to-be should go for heirloom jewellery for their special day or not. “It doesn’t have to be an either-or. Soon-to-be brides can embrace the beauty and history of heirloom pieces while creating their own legacy for future generations through meaningful pieces they buy that celebrate their story. I would say look for jewellery you can wear often and enjoy, that allows for versatility in styling - not pieces you will wear once and then keep in your locker.”

Before signing off, Sonam leaves us with her favourite timeless jewellery hack. “I’ve always loved layering and stacking jewellery. It allows you to mix different styles and pieces to create a look that is uniquely yours.”
