Hair extensions can transform a bridal hairstyle without requiring years to grow out your hair. Whether you choose a classic braid or bun, a neat slicked-back ponytail, or simply let down those cascading waves, they come dime a dozen. But they can also put additional tension on natural hair, which is why choosing the right extensions requires more thought than simply picking the longest set.

“The three popular options for brides are clip-in, tape-in, and keratin-bonded extensions,” explains Kajal Shirodkar, style director at Jean Claude Biguine Salon & Spa. “Each method offers a different level of flexibility, longevity, and comfort, so the right choice should always be based on the bride’s individual hair and styling needs.”

The Different Types Of Extensions

Clip-ins are the most beginner-friendly, temporary option, adding length or volume for a particular hairstyle. As the name implies, they are clipped onto the hair and can be removed after the function without hassle.

Tape-ins, on the other hand, are applied to natural hair with adhesive tapes. The attachment is relatively flat, making them discreet, lightweight, and comfortable when professionally applied. They can be worn for several weeks with appropriate care and maintenance.

Keratin-bond extensions, meanwhile, are applied strand by strand using a keratin-based bond. This allows the placement to be customised according to the bride’s density and desired hairstyle, while giving the hair natural movement.

The right extension should be appropriate for the bride’s hair condition, density, and desired look. According to Shirodkar, the right extension should enhance the natural hair without placing unnecessary weight or tension on it.

“When a bride is looking for volume rather than significant length, she does not necessarily need a large or heavy set of extensions,” she explains. “Lightweight extensions, strategically placed, can create beautiful fullness while keeping the hairstyle comfortable and balanced. The placement can be customised according to the areas where additional volume is needed.”

Match To Your Hairstyle

Rule of thumb? You don’t want your hair extensions to stick out like a sore thumb. Which is why it is essential to blend them in with your natural hair texture and the style you choose. For that, Shirodkar recommends starting with a professional consultant.

“The stylist should assess the bride’s natural hair texture, density, length, fullness, and beautiful movement while creating a soft, flowing finish,” she says. “For a ponytail, the placement and weight of the extensions are particularly important because the hair is gathered together and the attachments need to remain discreet.”

For buns and more structured updos, extensions can be placed strategically to provide the volume and support required. For finer hair, it is essential to avoid adding unnecessary weight simply to achieve fullness.

Work Backwards

Hair extensions aren’t a snap decision you make on the day of your wedding. Consultation, selection, and trials need to be planned well in advance. This allows the stylist to assess the placement, comfort, colour, and blending, while also giving the bride an opportunity to become familiar with how the extensions feel and move.

“Colour matching is also one of the most important details in achieving a natural finish,” says Shirodkar. “Extensions should be selected to complement the lengths and ends of the natural hair.”

Focus On Your Hair Health

For Dr Geetika Srivastava
, MD, Dermatology at AIIMS New Delhi, assessing the density, strength, and overall health of natural hair and scalp before opting for hair extensions is crucial. The major concern with extensions is tension.

Extensions add weight to natural hair — if they are too heavy, attached too tightly or repeatedly placed in the same areas, they can create continuous pulling on the hair shaft and follicle. This can cause breakage, thinning, and, with prolonged or repeated tension, may lead to traction alopecia.

For those with good hair density and strong, healthy strands, extensions can be an option to temporarily add length and volume. If you’ve got fine, fragile, bleached, chemically-treated, or low-density hair or hair that breaks easily, however, you need to be cautious.

“Extensions should also preferably be avoided when there is active scalp inflammation, significant dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, folliculitis, sores or an unexplained scalp rash,” warns Dr Srivastava. “Certain adhesives and other materials used with extensions can also trigger irritant or allergic contact dermatitis in susceptible individuals, resulting in itching, redness, swelling and inflammation.”

Incorrect application can irritate or injure the scalp, too. As Dr Srivastava notes, avoid attaching extensions to the same sections repeatedly, allow adequate time without extensions between applications, match the weight to your natural hair density, and watch for warning signs.

Caring For Your Natural Hair & Hair Extensions

Hair extensions don’t come without risk — no matter which type you choose. Good aftercare is essential, particularly during weddings when hair is washed and heat-styled more frequently than usual. Shirodkar recommends gently brushing from the ends upwards, taking extra care around the attachment points, and cleansing without intense rubbing or scrubbing.

For repeated waves or curls, she suggests always detangling the hair and applying heat protection beforehand. At night, loosely securing the hair or wearing it in a relaxed braid can minimise friction and tangling. Extensions should also be professionally maintained and removed according to the recommended timeframe.

Beauty should not come with a cost of pain. Persistent scalp tenderness, excessive tightness, headaches, itching, redness, swelling, bumps or a developing rash are warning signs that the extensions need to be removed or loosened — don’t wait for your scalp to get used to them.

“A simple rule I give my patients is that an aesthetic modification should never interfere with normal comfort or functionality,” warns Dr Srivastava.
