In an era where fast fashion quite often overshadows the intricate beauty of traditional craftsmanship, the House of Sabyasachi takes stock of sustainable luxury with The Curiosity, Art & Antiquity Project’ that launched in 2018 and still stands tall to that commitment in 2024.

Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s eponymous brand has been dedicated to preserving the rich legacy of India’s textiles and handicrafts. Today, it directly and indirectly employs over 3,900 artisans, including master weavers, dyers, and printers, whose skills have been passed down through generations.

The designer’s initiative is designed to elevate and safeguard the invaluable crafts. When asked how his vision has evolved since the project’s inception, Sabyasachi is resolute in his commitment. “My vision has not changed; if anything, it has become more relevant. Tradition and craftsmanship are the pinnacle of luxury, and their preservation is the truest form of sustainability,” he says, reaffirming the brand’s mission to blend tradition with modern sensibilities.

For Sabyasachi, the concept of luxury has taken on a new meaning in 2024. “Luxury in 2024 is time; it is our rarest, most precious, and completely irreplaceable possession,” he explains. This philosophy is embodied in the brand’s meticulous, time-honoured processes, where the focus is on quality over quantity, and where each piece tells a story of heritage, artistry, and dedication.

The project makes use of some of the “rarest of rare” materials and techniques, many of which are on the brink of extinction. From single taar Chikankari on chiffon to intricate hand embroidery on pashmina, Sabyasachi serves as a custodian of these endangered crafts.

“What is more valuable still are the techniques of hand stitching we preserve. Any time-consuming, complex process done by the human hand is becoming rarer and rarer in an era of fast fashion and instant gratification,” Sabyasachi laments, highlighting the importance of preserving these skills for future generations.

In Sabyasachi’s view, true luxury is inherently sustainable. He draws a clear distinction between mass-market consumption and the thoughtful curation of high-quality, artisanal products. “Only true luxury is sustainable. Mindless acquisition and thoughtless consumption define the mass market. Seeking the best quality, finest materials, and stewardship of traditional technique is an act of preservation and the responsible use of resources,” he emphasises.

Bringing the craft techniques of the past into the future requires more than just preservation; it necessitates a shift in consumer consciousness. “Craft can only be sustained through economics; the more a customer appreciates and values a product dreamed in the mind and made by the hand, the more craft will prevail,” he asserts. This appreciation, he believes, is key to ensuring that these crafts continue to thrive in a world where fast fashion is growing fast!

Sabyasachi stresses how the quality of traditional techniques has often been compromised in the pursuit of lower costs. However, the designer seems committed to the most qualitative variations of these techniques. “Techniques are not obsolete, but the quality is. Skills have not been lost because we have protected the knowledge and preserved it from previous generations,” he notes.

As today’s brides become increasingly attuned to their cultural roots, Sabyasachi observes a trend towards seeking authenticity through tradition. “Today’s bride is a culture-seeker as a source of authenticity in a world that often seems artificial,” he observes, underscoring the importance of heritage in contemporary bridal fashion.

The Curiosity, Art & Antiquity Project is not solely about preserving craft; it’s about instilling values and principles that transcend fashion. Sabyasachi envisions a legacy built on integrity, both in business and craft. “If I was to leave something behind, it would not be just a legacy of craft, but of principles,” he reflects.

Looking to the future, his hopes are rooted in a deeper understanding of values. “I hope that people understand the importance of values and begin looking inward rather than out for validation and authenticity. When we are unshakeable in ourselves and confident in our principles, we can collectively make the world a better place,” he concludes, encapsulating the ethos of the House of Sabyasachi.
