Abraham & Thakore Turned Trash Into Couture For The Runway

Abraham & Thakore have earned their hefty title ‘Masters of Minimalism’ by consistently putting out modern, clutter-free collections that champion Indian textiles. Their latest showcase atFDCI x Lakmé Fashion Week takes it a step further.
The designers presented their Spring-Summer 2025 collection ‘Finding Beauty’ on the Sustainability Fashion Day at LFW. This time, the designers platformed conscious consumption by interweaving trash through couture. Literally.
‘Finding Beauty’ reimagined waste as treasure by converting gunny bags, toffee and chip wrappers, bin bags, kitchen foil and rice sacks into fabric.
Actress Shephali Shah opened the show in a black belted sari made of unspooled cassette tapes intricately woven into organza. Models followed her in slinky cocktail gowns, jackets, knee-length dresses and saris, of course, made using unconventional materials.
“This is an attempt to overcome our conditioning. We tend to value what we are taught to value. This collection is an exercise that questions these preconceptions. Looking for beauty in the detritus of our consumer economy,” said David Abraham on their decision to take trash and turn it into (metaphoric) gold. “We want to create clothing that demonstrates that beautiful fashion can be made from the unexpected.”
The dark, almost apocalyptic, ambience of the showcase was elevated with the metallic accents that were peppered throughout the collection. Upon closer examination, it became clear that the shiny surface embellishments were laser-cut sequins made from discarded X-rays!
The stunning array of evening gowns, saris, and occasional jumpsuits are, according to the designer, perfect additions to the wardrobes of any fellow minimalist for the upcoming festive and wedding season.
While black and white was very much prevalent throughout the collection, the designers’ signature colour palette saw an upgrade with an addition of mocha tones throughout. “We love the colour,” proclaimed David, in a post-show chat with Manifest, “We love the shades of chocolate and coffee. It’s a very good alternative to black.”
