Designers Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla made a comeback to the ICW runway after a 7-year hiatus with their labels 'Asal' and 'Mard'...

Designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla made their comeback to the runway after a seven-year hiatus by kickstarting the Hyundai India Couture Week, in association with Reliance Brands Limited, with their labels 'Mard' and 'Asal'.

With 'Disco Mujra' as the theme, the collection was showcased against the backdrop of a Haveli. Comedian Sumukhi Suresh introduced the show, and needless to say, it was a laugh riot. The soundtrack of the show was an original recording by the musician duo Akshay & IP. The show was peppered with performances by classical Indian dancers, which was a treat to watch. Between Sumukhi, Akshay & IP and the dancers, it was quite a broad spectrum of art forms that were on display at the show. We’re not complaining.

'Asal', the diffusion womenswear label, showcased the collection 'Asal Bride', which aims to amalgamate the old with the new. For ‘Mard’, the collection ‘The Regal Groom of Mard', focuses on how men no longer shy away from embracing maximalism.

The menswear looks were stunning, to say the least. The collection featured jackets, sherwanis and capes in beautiful embroideries. But one thing that both the Mard and Asal collections had in common was the quintessential Abu Sandeep opulence.

While we love a good Abu Sandeep lehenga, this time round, we couldn’t help but fall for the menswear. The show-stoppers were none other than Taha Shah Badussha and Wamiqa Gabbi. Interestingly, it was both their first time walking the runway. Taha wore a sheer metallic kurta for his first look and an ivory embellished cape for his second look. Wamiqa wore an ivory lehenga with a beaded veil, and later a traditional lehenga with gotta patti and zardozi embroidery. “It was like a dream walking for Abu Sandeep for my first time on the runway. The ivory lehenga is a dream.” Waqima said. The looks were paired with jewellery from G.K. Chudiwalas.
While pastels mostly dominated the collection, we also saw some colour-block looks. Men’s looks were dreamy, and displayed a wide range of colours and silhouettes. Honourable mention: A black sheer kurta with embroidered leaves.

With such a banger of an opening show, we can't wait to see what's in store for the rest of the Hyundai India Couture Week.
