Anju Modi On The New Age Bride And Her Collection ‘Apoorna-Sampoorn’

After over three decades of breathing new life into traditional hand-woven textiles, Anju Modi is still at the forefront of the movement to popularise Indian artisans and crafts.

This is evident in her latest collection ‘Apoorna-Sampoorn’ that the designer is showcasing at the upcoming FDCI Manifest Wedding Weekend.

Manifest: We’re excited to see ‘Apoorna-Sampoorn’ at the FDCI Manifest Wedding Weekend. Can you tell us more about it?

Anju Modi: In my latest collection, "Apoorn - Sampoorn," I explore the dichotomy and harmony between the incomplete (Apoorn) and the complete (Sampoorn) aspects of design and tradition. Embracing the beauty of imperfections in design and craftsmanship, where every flaw tells a story of human touch and heritage. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of Indian culture, where imperfections are celebrated as part of life's beauty, I weave together intricate textiles and craftsmanship to create garments that resonate with both depth and elegance.

M: How would you define an Anju Modi bride?

AM: An Anju Modi bride epitomizes elegance and royalty. Draped in a luxurious lehenga adorned with intricate zardozi embroidery and delicate hand-woven motifs, she exudes opulence in rich hues of royal red, deep blue, or emerald green. Complementing her attire are traditional Indian jewellery pieces, featuring polki and kundan sets embellished with uncut diamonds and gemstones, adding a sparkling touch to her ensemble. Anju Modi's designs not only showcase the exquisite beauty of Indian textiles but also honour their cultural heritage, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. Each creation is a masterpiece that harmoniously bridges the gap between tradition and contemporary style, ensuring the bride embodies timeless beauty on her wedding day.

M: In your opinion, how do you think social media has played a role in defining bridal style and choices over the past few years in the country?

AM: Social media has truly transformed bridal fashion by bringing an incredible variety of styles right to our fingertips. Platforms like Instagram let brides discover and share unique looks, blending traditional and modern elements effortlessly. It’s amazing how this digital space allows for such personal expression and creativity in wedding attire.

M: What would be your advice for brides, or wedding attendees, who are looking to invest in couture that’s timeless and mindful?

AM: For timeless couture, go for classic designs and quality materials that stand the test of time. Opt for pieces with enduring craftsmanship rather than fleeting trends. Pay attention to details like fit and fabric, which ensure longevity and elegance. Choosing something that feels both special and enduring will ensure you treasure it for years to come.

M: What are some things about the Indian fashion landscape that are exciting to you today?

AM: I’m thrilled by how Indian fashion is evolving with a fresh blend of tradition and innovation. There’s a strong focus on sustainability and a renewed appreciation for traditional craftsmanship, reimagined in modern ways. It’s an exciting time, with the fashion scene embracing both cultural richness and contemporary flair.

M: Tell us about your journey as one of the most prolific costume designers in Bollywood. What goes behind creating the costumes that remain indelible in the minds of fans across the world?

AM: It's been an incredible journey, spanning over two decades, with iconic films and series like Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela, Bajirao Mastani, and Taj: Divided by Blood. Creating unforgettable costumes requires a deep understanding of the film's narrative, characters, and era. I delve into research, experimenting with fabrics, colours, and textures to bring the director's vision to life.

M: Can you share the most memorable feedback you’ve gotten from Sanjay Leela Bhansali, or an actor you’ve designed for, on your clothes for his movies?

AM: Sanjay Leela Bhansali once told me, "Anju, your costumes are not just clothes, they're characters in themselves." That resonated deeply, as I strive to make each piece a testament to the film's essence. I've also received heartfelt appreciation from actors like Deepika Padukone, who trusted me to create her iconic looks in Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani, and Priyanka Chopra, who admired my attention to detail in Bajirao Mastani.

M: Who would you say is your celebrity muse (or muses)?

AM: I'm fortunate to have had the pleasure of dressing several talented actors, each with their unique essence. Aditi Rao Hydari, with her ethereal beauty and versatility, is one of my muses. Deepika Padukone's grace and poise inspire me to create stunning pieces. Priyanka Chopra's confidence and charisma challenge me to push boundaries. And Ranveer Singh's enthusiasm and energy encourage me to experiment with bold ideas.

M: What have been some of the most challenging moments in your journey and what have you learned from them?

AM: Challenges have been plenty, from tight deadlines to sourcing rare materials. But each obstacle has taught me perseverance and creative problem-solving. One of the most challenging moments was creating the elaborate costumes for Bajirao Mastani, which required meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy.

M: You recently collaborated with Obeetee carpets for their Viraasat collection. Can you tell us about that and whether we’ll see an Anju Modi home decor line soon?

AM: My collaboration with Obeetee carpets for Viraasat was a delightful fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern design. As for an Anju Modi home decor line, I'd love to explore that in the future, bringing my passion for storytelling through fabric to interior design.
