You can spend months deciding on the lehenga, weeks picking out the jewellery, and still leave your nails until the very last minute. Then comes the nail moodboard spiral, where 17 shades of nude somehow start looking exactly the same. Which is probably a good reason to look beyond the usual bridal manicure. Classic will always work, but there’s plenty of room to make your nails feel a little more like you, whether that means red French tips, soft chrome, tiny pearls or a detail borrowed from your mehendi.
If you want something different but don’t want to go too far, try a red French tip. It is neat and classic, but feels much fresher than the usual pale pink. Wear it with gold jewellery and a red lipper, or keep everything else soft and let the red tips stand out against an ivory or blush outfit. And don’t worry about finding the exact same shade of red as your outfit. It will look better if it doesn’t match perfectly.
If you like chrome but don’t want very shiny, metallic nails, ask for a softer finish. Pearl, champagne and very light silver all work well. This is especially nice if your outfit is simple or modern. A clean sari, a minimal lehenga or a reception dress would all work with it.
Some brides want their nails to be barely noticeable. Others would happily add a little detail to every finger. If you’re the second kind, there is plenty you can do. Wearing pearls? Add a few to the nails. Wearing mostly gold? Try a fine gold detail. It will make the whole look feel connected without becoming too matchy-matchy.
Your mehendi is right there, so you might as well use it for inspiration. Pick one small motif you like and simplify it for your nails. A flower, leaf or paisley is more than enough. You don’t need the whole mehendi design on your fingertips. It’s a small detail, but it looks lovely when the nails and mehendi are seen together.
If you’re wearing your mother’s jewellery, a family heirloom or a lot of polki and kundan, bright gold nails can sometimes feel a little too much. Try an antique-looking gold instead. Something softer and slightly muted works beautifully with traditional jewellery and heavily embroidered clothes. An almond-shaped nail will also keep the look feeling modern, especially if the rest of your wedding outfit is more traditional.

If you want to experiment with colour, the mehendi is probably the place to do it. A floral manicure in pink, green and gold works beautifully with lighter mehendi outfits, flowers and stacks of bangles. You can keep the base simple and add little flowers, or go brighter if that feels more like you.
