From polished, poker straight bobs and messy shaggy bobs, to pixie cuts and clavicle-grazing hair, going short seems to be the flavour of the season. It-Girls like Lily Collins, Gracie Abrams, Shanaya Kapoor, and Zoë Kravitz have been offering some major short hair inspiration lately, and we are sold.
However, if you are a bridesmaid who wants to go short right now, but is held back because your hair won't grow back before the wedding festivities, think again. The age-old belief that Indian outfits look the best with longer hair might be outdated after all. Backing this sentiment, hairstylist Nitin Sankla explains, “I think it’s a common misconception that short hair doesn't go well with occasion wear. Short hair can actually be very versatile when styled correctly. Over the years, I've worked with many clients who had short hair, and we've been able to create beautiful wedding looks without needing a lot of length. It's more about texture, shape, and the right finishing touches.”
Remember when Gracie Abrams wore her Chanel skirt and top set with a skinny dupatta (or a Scandinavian scarf, as they like to call it), and paired it with her signature bob? If her set, which was basically a Y2K lehenga, can look great with a bob, there’s no reason your lehenga won’t look good with short hair!
It’s less about the length of your hair, and more about how you style it. “Soft textured waves are always a great choice because they're timeless, and flattering on most people.” explains Nitin. “I also love side-swept curls, sleek tucked-behind-the-ear looks, and half-up styles with small twists or braids. Accessories can make a huge difference as well—fresh flowers, decorative pins, or a maang tikka can instantly transform a simple hairstyle into a wedding-ready hairstyle. Ultimately, the best hairstyle is one that feels comfortable and reflects your personality and style.” he adds.
Celebrities Who Rocked Short Hair
Take a cue from Diana Penty and go for a wet look by styling your hair in a side parted gelled look. A great hairstyle to be paired with a sleek gown, or a sexy slit sari— perfect match for glam cocktail outfit!
Or, you can even channel some retro energy with soft Old-Hollywood curls. Exhibit A: this beautiful vintage hair look on Shanaya Kapoor! It’s chic, classic, and makes the hair look super voluminous!
If you tend to gravitate towards a more natural look as opposed to something overtly styled, we suggest this your-hair-but-better look on Alia Bhatt that mimics the natural texture of the hair.
Remember when Diana Penty paired her gold Manish Malhotra sari with soft beachy waves at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year? That’s one hairstyle that’s hard to go wrong with!
Remember when Sabrina Carpenter styled her short hair with a bejewelled headgear at the Met Gala this year? And Camila Mendes also paired her poker straight short hair with jewellery at the same event? Take a cue from them and adorn your short hair with jewels this wedding season. Go all out: mathapatti, sheeshpatti, maangtikka, passa…
You can even take inspiration from Sonali Bendre and wear your short hair in a half-up-half-down hairstyle.
If you have a bob cut, we suggest keeping things polished and classic, just like Lily Collins. Sometimes, clean, side parted poker straight hair is all you need with a bob cut.
Or, if you like to keep it fun and messy, take a cue from Gracie Abrams, and go for an unkempt bob.
