Designer-Duo Shantanu And Nikhil Are Redefining Edgy Glamour For Men
Designer Shantanu Mehra talks to Manifest about the label's latest collection 'Studio Mix'. Take a look...
The air is thick with nostalgia and the tunes of synthesizer-heavy Nu-disco genre at the recently opened Piano Man Jazz Club in the capital. Guests enter the arena in silhouettes reminiscent of the 1970s, and models walk in ensembles that showcase the perfect classic and contemporary blend.
The couture show comes to life with floral designs, a homage to the fashion icons of the post-war era. Predominantly a menswear collection, there’s also the classic paisley motif peppered across gowns, shirts et al that is reminiscent of Kashmir’s heritage. There are short jackets, and wide-legged trousers that feature stripes—a classic 70s take.
The 1970s was all about easy-on and easy-off fashion. The 'Studio Mix' collection is soft and worships the figure in its natural form.
In a conversation with one-half of the brand Shantanu Mehra, Manifest learns more about their collection ‘Studio Mix’ and how the 70s have been reimagined in the world of S&N to pave the way for trends that will now shine all year round.
In Conversation With Shantanu Mehra, Of Shantnu & Nikhil
Manifest: Why have you named your collection Studio Mix?
Shantanu Mehra: We named our collection Studio Mix because it represents a fusion of diverse elements from the 70s. We tried blending the era's iconic styles and attitudes into a cohesive narrative. From vibrant prints to sartorial elegance—The collection is a mix of influences—all coming together to create a unique and contemporary expression of a spirit that’s timeless.
M: What kind of a personality would love to wear pieces from the Studio Mix collection?
SM: This collection is for those who embody a bold and experimental spirit. We envision this collection on the kind of people with a strong individual sense of style, who aren’t afraid of having fun with their clothing choices. Moreover, this era was defined by daring sartorial choices—vibrant prints, bootcut trousers, luxurious silks, and more. But most importantly, a fearless approach to fashion as a form of self-expression. They should feel free to style the pieces in their unique way, rather than simply following the presentation we have showcased.
M: What are some of the details can we possibly spot in your new collection?
SM: Studio Mix is a predominantly menswear show that truly plays to our strengths. The show embodies a certain 70s aesthetic, where street meets couture, and our signature drapes and fits shine through. We've always played an evolved game in menswear, and this collection is us coming back to all our core elements. The collection has seamlessly blended military chic with patriotic elements—creating a collection that is symbolic of our achievements in the realm of menswear. Expect a retro glam vibe with a cocktail feel, reflecting our commitment to pushing the boundaries of menswear design.
M: You bring back the good ol’ paisley print into the picture…
SM: Incorporating paisley print into our collection allowed us to weave a narrative that celebrates both tradition and modernity. We have tried presenting the motif in a fresh, modern twist. The reintroduction has added a layer of depth and storytelling that connects the past with the present. These motifs are more than just decorative patterns; they carry the legacy of Kashmir’s artistry and the global journey of this beloved design. The print which was once revered as a symbol of peace and harmony, has made a grand reentrance and is meticulously crafted in our collection. Adding a sense of continuity, linking the spirit of the 70s with contemporary aesthetics—we believe it is a pattern that has transcended time.
M: With inspiration from the 70s, do you think old fashion choices always make a comeback?
SM: Fashion is no longer about making a comeback; it’s about taking bits and pieces from various eras and their trends, and making them your own. This approach allows for a more personal and individualised style. Take, for instance, our Studio Mix collection, we've evolved our menswear by revisiting signature silhouettes like the classic Bandhgala. However, now it comes with a new drape and a shorter length. The ‘70s were all about bold choices and owning them, and Studio Mix captures that essence by integrating the best elements of the past into a modern, distinctive style.
M: Lastly, are there any tracks from the ‘70s that helped with the design process?
SM: Our entire atelier has been listening to Madboymink nonstop to get into the spirit of the show!
