On Monday night, when ace designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee dropped a cryptic post hinting at a collab with The Metropolitan Museum of Art (known popularly as The MET) it got everyone to instantly sit up and take notice! What would it be like? Would it see his signature Royal Bengal Tiger insignia bags? Gem-encrusted cavate garde jewellery, sequined tulle veils, organa veils… more? That mystery can now be laid to rest.
The designer has revealed his hot new plans for The Met—he’s embarking on a collab with the museum over its huge 5,000-year-old collection and will create an exclusive jewellery line inspired it, ahead of this year’s New York Fashion Week. Expected in the collection will be historic motifs and design references from ancient times across The Met's Greek and Roman, Medieval and Islamic art sections, redrafted into high jewellery.
This morning, Sabyasachi shared a short preview video on his official Instagram handle featuring the designer walking past The Met’s beautiful Greek and Roman Art Galleries. He stops and watches them in admiration and ponders over the priceless art. As the trailer rolls, he’s heard saying a connoisseur of luxury’s first instinct would be to ask, “Eta ki haather kaaj?” (Are these made by hand?), pointing to the importance of craftsmanship, integrity and the involvement in valuing art.
The post also carried the lines: “History does not exist in fragments. It exists in a continuum. In collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, inspired by 5,000 years of art and history, this collection reimagines cultural exchange of the Byzantine Empire through High Jewellery, transforming historic designs into modern heirlooms.”
The designer—whose work spans Indian couture and textiles, architecture, jewellery and accessories—marks a move to NYFW on September 15, nearly two decades after his first New York runway show. This first chapter will entail a multiyear collaboration with The Met.
Sabyasachi, who's jewellery was worn by everyone from Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone to Lupita Nyong'o, Rihanna and Ginnifer Goodwin, is sure going to grab attention with his new lineup. We cannot wait.
