Long-lasting, alcohol-free, and travel friendly, solid perfumes are slowly making their way into everyone's shelves, and rightfully so. If their long list of pros is anything to go by, it looks like they have entered the game for good, as opposed to being just a fad.
As opposed to the liquid perfumes that come in the form of sprays and attars, solid perfumes have a balm-y texture, since wax acts as their base. These perfumes are made of three fundamental components: wax, carrier oils, and the scent. The wax could be beeswax, soy wax, or candelilla wax. While the carrier oil could be any lightweight oil like jojoba, sweet almond, or coconut oil. Their final component, which is the scent, usually comes from essential oils, although synthetic fragrance oils are also used. These perfumes are gently rubbed on the pulse points, and the skin’s warmth melts the balm, releasing a lingering scent.
Highlighting how solid perfumes make for a better buy than sprays, Kanika Bhatia, co-founder of solid perfume brand Joon, explains, “Solid perfumes are designed to wear differently from traditional sprays. Rather than projecting strongly into a room, they sit closer to the skin, creating a more intimate and personal fragrance experience that unfolds gradually throughout the day. Because they're formulated with waxes and oils rather than alcohol, the scent tends to linger longer on the skin. They're also free from parabens, making them a great option for everyday use.”
Since solid perfumes don’t have alcohol, they don’t dry out the skin. The wax, which is the base ingredient of these perfumes, acts like a moisturiser, and conditions the skin, making these perfumes very nourishing. Kanika explains, “Solid perfumes offer a more thoughtful, skin-first fragrance experience. They are gentler on the skin and better suited for everyday use. The fragrance melts into the skin and develops more intimately rather than evaporating quickly after application.”
These perfumes are also just as versatile as their liquid counterparts, when it comes to the fragrances. They offer a wide variety of fragrance families, from floral and woody, to citrus and musky.
“Solid perfumes are also incredibly versatile when it comes to layering. They're a fun way to experiment with fragrance—whether that's pairing them with a matching EDP to enhance longevity or discovering unexpected combinations that create a scent that's uniquely your own.” explains Kanika.
To reiterate, solid perfumes are long-lasting, moisturising, easy to travel with. Which begs the question, aren’t they too good to be true? Is there something we’re missing? Simple answer? No! Solid perfumes are completely safe, as long as the ingredients are good, according to Kanika. “When formulated responsibly, solid perfumes are generally a safe and effective way to wear fragrance. Like any beauty or personal care product, the quality of the formulation and ingredients matters far more than the format itself. Consumers should always take a moment to understand what they're putting on their skin and choose products from brands that are transparent about their ingredients and manufacturing standards,” she states.
