Paranda, a humble hair accessory that has launched countless Punjabi poems and some viral earworms, has become a major domain for customisation with unique additions and forms. At the Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet this year, Laapataa Ladies [2024] actor Nitanshi Goel made headlines with a customised pearl paranda. Crafted by jewellery brand BeAbhika, it featured miniature frames of iconic Indian women in cinema. “Since the Cannes Film Festival this year, interest in customised parandas has surged,” says Founder Madhulika Anchalia. “They’ve evolved into fashion accessories.”

For Radhika Ambani’s mehendi ceremony, Tarun Tahiliani created a paranda to match her Kutchi-inspired lehenga. Bohochic versions like the one worn by stylist Ankita Ajbani Nagpal are now viral hits. Bridal hairstylist Pratiksha Verma confirms their growing popularity. “Brides are choosing parandas that match their outfits, whether through textile, embroidery, or embellishments,” says Verma. “It’s the perfect mix of traditional and modern, especially for pre-wedding functions.”

Today’s parandas feature initials, pearls, gota, Swarovski crystals, and intricate work, such as Phulkari and Zardozi. Another homegrown label, Ziddi, run by sisters Malvika and Pallavi Lalwani, works with Patwa artisans to create thread-woven heirlooms. Customising your paranda is more than just a fleeting trend—it is a deeply personal statement woven into the bridal braid.
