The best thing about being a chronically online generation is that we have an endless source of inspiration for everything, from our OOTDS to our wedding style. Speaking of weddings and all things couples, we’re loving the recent viral fingerprint ring trend that is all over our ‘Explore’ page  I first spotted it in a video posted by Smadar Edri Jewelry on Instagram, which created a gold, heart-shaped signet ring with the fingerprints of both partners imprinted on the signet. It seemed an endearing, personal and unique design for those who are looking for more than just wedding bands with their partners.

Where Did The Trend Come From?

While the trend might have been cropping up on our algorithm now, a little digging through the annals of Reddit revealed that it has been around for almost a decade! Though, back then, the norm was for craftsmen and designers to make these fingerprint rings from silver or platinum.

But as we spoke to Coimbatore-based jewellery brand AuGrav’s co-founder Vivek Krishna, we found out that a 2015 video by the label showcasing their fingerprint rings received around 7-8 million views on Instagram. “We set up the brand in 2014, and in 2015 a video of our fingerprint rings went viral, so much so, that newspapers covered our brand and its unique 3D printing designing process,” says Vivek.

As for why the design has become so wildly popular, it seems, customisation is becoming incredibly personal and intimate. “Customisation has become a cornerstone of modern jewellery design, allowing individuals to tell their unique stories through personalised pieces. Fingerprint rings, with their deeply personal touch, epitomise this trend, offering couples a way to celebrate their connection intimately and timelessly. As technology continues to evolve, the possibilities for creating bespoke jewellery that resonates on a deeply personal level are endless, making it an exciting time for both designers and customers,” says Vivek Ramabhadran, founder of sustainable jewellery brand Aulerth.

Where Can You Get The Fingerprint Rings?

Brands such asAuGravhave led the trend. You can choose to order rings from them, as they still retail the designs. Apart from this, if you’re interested in sterling silver fingerprint rings, then Surat-based labelLuxezis a great option. Other than that, Malabar Gold and Diamonds produce similar designs, where you can email them the images of your fingerprints to get a customised order.

because each time I looked at it, I saw a new meaning.

Putting together a homegrown title at a time when the demise of print has been long announced may seem surprising...

And nothing, absolutely nothing, represents India more than our weddings. It is a time when families are brought together. Traditions come alive as they are adapted to each couple's beliefs. And lives are joined in a way that the romantic in me still enjoys.
