Priyanka Chopra chose to wear it, while Alia Bhatt skipped it. Deepika Padukone wore it, but Kiara Advani didn’t. Katrina Kaif wore it, while Sonam Kapoor didn’t. Why is it that some brides choose to embrace the nose ring, or the good old ‘nath’ on their wedding day, while others skip it? And how can you decide if it will work for you?

A nath is an absolutely beautiful piece of jewellery that instantly adds a touch of grandeur and gravitas to your face. Not only does it look beautiful, but it is also rooted deep in our culture, given that it’s a part of the Solah Shringar, or the sixteen ornaments a married woman must adorn herself with. Then why do brides choose to let go of this ornament for their bridal look?

A nath (or the lack thereof) can significantly affect your look. Whether you do a tiny nath, or a nath the size of your bangle, it’ll make a huge difference to the overall aesthetic of your look. While there is a good chance that adding a nose ring will enhance your look, there are certain scenarios where you should skip it. So it’s important to understand whether a nose ring will work with your bridal look or not.

Understand the aesthetic of your outfit

For starters, what is the aesthetic of your look like? If you are wearing a romantic, pastel, lehenga with pearls and lace and a coquette-core aesthetic, wearing a nose ring might not be a good idea. For example, Alanna Panday opted for a delicate ivory chikankari lehenga with pearls and a romantic tulle. To lean into the contemporary, ethereal aesthetic of the look, she skipped the nose ring. While a few celebrities who opted for traditional, earthy, red outfits—like Katrina Kaif and Patralekhaa—chose to wear a nose ring, it only enhanced their outfits’ appeal. So, to begin, understand the aesthetic of your look well.

Choose one to go with your face structure

If a nose ring works well with the overall aesthetic of your look but it doesn’t suit your facial structure, there is no reason to be wearing it as a bride. This is why jewellery trials are important. If you’re unsure about the nose ring during your trials despite it working well with the outfit, there is a good chance that it doesn’t suit you and you should skip it. Alternatively, you can try a smaller nose ring. However, certain facial structures allow lots of room to wear big, dramatic nose rings, in which case, a nose ring will elevate your look. Most Indian women with well-defined oval-shaped faces for example, will look great wearing a nose ring!

See if it is in sync with the rest of the jewellery

If the nose ring goes with the aesthetic of your look and also suits your face, there is still a chance that it might not go well with your overall look if the other jewellery pieces that you are wearing are too overpowering. For example, Sonam Kapoor wore a huge maathapatti as a bride that covered a significant part of her forehead. Since her head jewellery served as the focal point of the look, wearing a nose ring might have made it too overpowering. So, in this case, skipping a nose ring seemed like a wise choice. However, if your look does not have any other jewellery piece in particular that serves as the focal point, you can go for a big statement nath. In fact, it’s advisable to add a nath in that case, since it will act as the focal point then and elevate the look. So whether or not to wear a nose ring has to also be a personalised choice based on the styling.
