The word ‘Navratna’ originates from the Sanskrit words ‘Nav’ meaning ‘nine’, and ‘Ratna’ meaning ‘Gems’, which is essentially jewellery made with nine different gemstones. According to Hindu astrology, everyone’s life is influenced by nine planets, and each of the nine gemstones in a Navratna jewellery piece represent a different planet. These nine gemstones are Ruby, Emerald, Red Coral, Yellow Sapphire, Blue Sapphire, Diamond, Hessonite, Cat’s Eye, and Pearl. The nine planets that these gemstones correspond with are Sun, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, Ascending Lunar Node, and Moon, and Descending Lunar Node. These nine cosmic forces are said to effect our life, so wearing Navratna jewellery, or the combination of each of the nine gemstones that correspond to these planets can balance the energies of these planets, hence bettering all areas of one’s life. In Ancient India, only royals and people of high status could wear Navratna jewellery.

Individually, each of these gemstones have a different effect on the person wearing them, and work on different areas like health, prosperity, protection against evil forces etc. For example, Pearl is considered to have a calming effect and help in curbing anger, whereas Emerald is considered to enhance intelligence.

Navratna gemstones are set in gold, although sometimes silver is also used. What’s noteworthy, however, is that the gemstones are set in the skeleton in a way that it is in context with the wearer’s skin, which is important for the gemstones to work. Another aspect that is important for Navratna Jewellery to work effectively is the placement of the gemstones. For example Ruby should be placed at the center, and all the other gemstones should be arranged around it.

Even if you’re the kind of person who just wants to invest in a Navratna jewellery piece because of how irresistibly stunning it is, great call either way. A Navratna jewellery piece goes a long way in effortlessly amping up a basic outfit. If wearing a subdued outfit and allowing the jewellery to take the center stage sounds like you, you could try Navratna jewellery.
