But her recent appearance at one of the Kansas City Chiefs NFL games had fans hooked for more reasons than one, especially because of her choice of accessory the night before.

Taylor Swift and her family stepped out for dinner the night before the game and eagle-eyed fans spotted something on her that rapidly began fuelling speculations of her being engaged to Travis Kelce. The singer was seen wearing what looked like a diamond infinity ring, traditionally a symbol of pre-engagement.

A fan took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their investigation into the ring. The post showed Taylor Swift’s ring next to a shot of a similar infinity ring with a screenshot of a Google search showing the meaning of an infinity ring. “They signify devotion or ‘promise’ of a future engagement,” reads the screenshot.

While many Swifties pointed out that Taylor has worn the infinity symbol multiple times, both on and off stage, and this could mean nothing, it’s worth noting that the singer rarely does anything without well-thought-out intent. It’s also telling that Taylor Swift held her hand at a particular angle, seemingly to make a big show of the hand with the ring.

The symbol of infinity, the sideways figure eight, has existed throughout history in many shapes and forms, from ancient Egypt to Greece, to the Celtic and Nordic cultures. It’s been known to symbolise eternity and interconnectedness. In modern times, the symbol has become associated with eternal love, especially when present in the form of jewellery like rings, bracelets and necklaces.

Infinity rings are also considered as ‘promise’ rings, meaning that they are a symbol of pre-engagement. Another famous couple who popularised these ‘promise’ rings was Prince William and Kate Middleton. Reportedly, William gave Kate a promise ring during their university days before he popped the question using Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have been surrounded by engagement rumours ever since they made their relationship public. So while this could be the real thing this time, it could also be, as a fan on X puts it, “just jewellery until she says otherwise.”
