ICYMI, the singer-actress just got engaged to Benny Blanco! Here’s what to know about her engagement ring…

Remember when we investigated Selena Gomez’s engagement status after a series of cryptic posts on Instagram? While the results were inconclusive back then, the singer-actress has finally revealed that she is, in fact, now engaged to Benny Blanco!
The Emilia Pérez actress shared photos of her sparkly new engagement ring on her Instagram, with the caption, “Forever begins now” with Benny commenting, “Hey wait…that’s my wife”! Selena’s BFF Taylor Swift also commented confirming that she “will be the flower girl”.

In the photos, Selena could be seen rocking a massive marquise diamond set on a sparkly diamond pavé band. This cut of diamond is not only beautiful and rare but comes with a fascinating history.

A marquise diamond is characterised by its elongated shape with pointed ends. Typically, this cut of diamond has 56-58 facets. The timeless cut has seen a resurgence in popularity recently. "The marquise-cut diamond ring has always been a symbol of elegance and refinement," says Piyush Gupta, Director, PP Jewellers by Pawan Gupta, "Its elongated shape enhances the brilliance of the diamond but also creates the appearance of a larger stone, making it universally popular. The marquise cut’s unique ability to reflect light beautifully from every angle makes it a standout choice for engagements and special moments."
If there’s one thing you cannot fault the French royals on is having exquisite tastes and extravagant desires. The marquise diamond originated in the court of Louis XV in 1745. As the story goes, Jean Antoinette Poisson caught the king’s eye during a masked ball in his court. After the enchanting meeting, the king moved her to the Palace of Versailles in an apartment above his royal chambers. Later, he presented her with the Pompadour Estate and made her a Marquise, which caused an uproar in the court, especially since she wasn’t from a noble family. The smitten king paid no attention to the naysayers and continued to lavish her with his attention and extravagant gifts. This included him getting his master jewellers to fashion a diamond cut in the shape of her lips, thus resulting in the creation of the marquise diamond.
The marquise diamond is usually worn by brides who have a flair for dramatics and a bold style sense. Some of the celebrities who wear marquise cut engagement rings, along with Selena Gomez, are Catherine Zeta-Jones and Victoria Beckham.
