Whether you are going for a clean, minimalist look or are planning to create a face that looks like it’s been contoured by a particularly skilled sculptor, the foundation will still be the most important step in your routine.

You might land on the right formula but knowing the correct way to apply it is key to getting the base right. We got some of the country’s top make-up artists to share their favourite foundation tips and tricks so you can achieve a flawless base without any blood, sweat or tears…

    Celebrity make-up artists' foundation hacks

    Primer is key

Simply Nam founder, and make-up artist to celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Namrata Soni cannot stress enough the importance of a primer suited for your skin type. “In the summer, opt for lightweight serums or gels to prep your skin for long-lasting makeup. If you have oily skin, apply an oil-free primer only to the oily areas, not all over your face. This approach applies to all skin types. Finish with a good setting powder to lock in your foundation and ensure it lasts all day,” she says.

    Let it sit

Celebrity make-up artist Shraddha Luthra advises that you take it slow. “After applying your foundation, let it sit on your skin for about 60 seconds before applying any other products,” she says, “This allows it to sink in, set properly, and last all day.”

    Use a stippling brush

Make-up artist Ojas Rajani swears by using a stippling brush to blend in the foundation. “You can use buildable coverage and polish the foundation into your skin in a way that looks seamless.”

    Setting spray, the versatile queen

Aside from, well, setting your make-up, a setting spray can also help you achieve a flawless base in Summer. “Mix foundation with setting spray for long-lasting wear on hot summer days,” says make-up artist Anu Mariya Jose, adding that applying it before and after the foundation can make it last longer.

    Don’t forget skincare

Goes without saying but you cannot hope to build a smooth base over skin that’s not treated well. Both make-up artists Ojas Rajani and Anu Mariya Jose insist that skincare cannot be skipped. “Prioritise skincare by double moisturising under the eyes for dry skin. A quick facial massage post-skincare enhances brightness and suppleness, ensuring makeup lasts longer,” says Jose.
