Luxury bridal makeup artist Ojas Rajani has spent over thirty years perfecting the most photographed faces in the country. Her brush has transformed everyone from Aishwarya Rai and Sridevi to Priyanka Chopra, making her an undisputed staple of the VIP wedding circuit. From high-profile Ambani nuptials to Goenka celebrations, Ojas is the ultimate first choice for one reason: she understands the endurance required of bridal beauty. Knowing what to prioritise amid a high-stakes wedding can be overwhelming. To simplify the process, Ojas breaks down the essential rules every bride should get right, the common pitfalls to avoid, and the small decisions that make the biggest impact.

The ‘Second Skin’ Foundation Rule

The most common mistake Ojas sees? Brides attempting to "brighten" their complexion with the wrong shades. "Your makeup should be like a second skin. It cannot be too light, or too bright," Ojas insists. The goal is a dewy finish that mimics the look of real, healthy skin. "I’m truly elated that brides are finally opting for dewy skin that enhances their features, rather than OTT fair, matte skin that looks dull and tired," she says. "Soft, dewy skin is the key to a luxe bride. It should blend in with a flushed radiance, not heavy shimmer."

Ditch the DM & Pick Up the Phone

In an era of automated replies, Ojas is a proponent of old-school connection. "The best way to communicate is over a phone or video call and definitely not through an Instagram DM," she says. This allows you to vet the artist's energy before the big day. "Easy communication makes it simpler to understand the bride’s needs and budget. Plus, it ensures you have fun and laughter during your session so the result is breathtakingly beautiful."

The Trial is a Trust Exercise

Think of the trial as a creative workshop. "Your makeup trial has to be paid with total trust in your artist's skills," Ojas explains. Once the look is set, she suggests a digital reality check. "The mirror shows you exactly how you look, but click a selfie for your satisfaction so there is no 'blame game' later. It creates pure magic when the bride and artist are in sync."

Be Radically Honest About Your Skin

Whether you have watery eyes or excess sweat issues (common for brides managing PCOD), Ojas needs to know the "weak points" early. "Always let your artist know if you have sensitive eyes or allergies," she advises. "Knowing this allows the artist to use sweat-proof products and finishing sprays that add to a bride’s comfort so she feels relaxed and present."

Level Up Your Skin Prep

Ojas doesn’t just start with a primer; she begins with what she calls a "mini-medspa" treatment to architect the face. When a bride wakes up with the puffiness brought on by wedding-week stress, Ojas reaches for her five-minute miracle. “A lymphatic drainage ice roller works the best to instantly depuff and soothe,” she shares. By layering this cold therapy with hydrating LED masks and collagen sheets, she ensures the makeup sits on a canvas that is already glowing and lifted.

The "Lash & Lip" Law

Two small details that can break a luxury look, according to Ojas, are lifting eyelashes and fading lipstick. "Making sure the eyelashes are stuck well is vital, you cannot have a faux pas mistake," she warns. She custom-blends shades to ensure they don't feather, ensuring a minimal chic look that stays intact throughout the wedding.

Confidence Over Consensus

"Your confidence is your style statement," Ojas concludes, and she warns against bringing a "beauty committee" into the bridal suite. "Do not listen to too many interfering friends around you, but trust your artist’s skills and the mirror," she says. "Even simple, clean makeup with perfect confidence and a smile is everlasting."

Ojas's No-Filter Guide to what’s IN and what’s OUT.

THE CINDERELLA LASH: "Instead of heavy lashes that look like crow's or pigeons' feet, use soft individual lashes or half-lashes. It gives 'Cinderella' vibes rather than looking like the Step-Sisters."

BLUSH IS THE NEW CONTOUR: "I totally love the trend of blush being used as a contour angle. Swap the "brown" contour for a lifted blush placement for a more youthful, snatched effect.

LIT, NOT SHIMMERY: "Luxe brides swear by 'Minimal Chic Glam.' It should be a flushed radiance that looks like second skin and not as a strong highlighter."

THE SELFIE RULE: “Always trust the mirror, it gives the most honest view of how your makeup is sitting in real time. But take a quick selfie too, because that’s the truest preview of how you’ll actually look in photographs.”
