Whether it’s summer, winter, monsoon or spring- moisturising your skin remains one of the essential steps in any skincare regime, regardless of your skin type. There is a wide array of options out there for skin hydration, like rich, oil-based creams or lightweight, water-based moisturisers. Choosing the right one for your skin can make all the difference in how it looks and feels.

What's The Difference Between Water And Oil-Based Moisturisers?

“Water-based moisturisers contain high levels of humectants in their composition which can be defined as compounds that attract moisture from the atmosphere and do not form a film on the skin or block pores. Whereas cream-based moisturisers contain more creams or emollients in their composition and are more suited for dry skin,” says Bengaluru-based celebrity dermatologist Dr Chytra Anand.

“Water-based moisturisers work well for oily and combination skin due to their non-comedogenic properties,” says Dr Chytra, adding, “However, people should keenly scrutinise the composition of a water-based moisturiser before deciding to procure one. The composition of the water-based moisturiser varies according to the skin type. For oily and combination skin, one should look for anti-bacterial elements like salicylic acid that prevent zit formation and acne aggravation. People with dry skin should opt for a cream water cream-based formulation and layer their water-based moisturiser with occlusives to reduce flaking.”

While all kinds of moisturisers have their pros and cons, water-based moisturisers are the most versatile and perform well on most skin types. If you are looking for a water-based moisturiser to add to your vanity, here are a few picks as per your skin type.
