Long before we had bridesmaids wearing haaslis with their beautiful lehengas at modern day weddings, haaslis were worn by the Banjara communities in Gujarat and Rajasthan, not as a style statement, but as a part of their culture. They are believed to have originated in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, and since then have been an integral part of Indian jewellery history.

Haasli, or the structured collar necklace that is thick at the center and tapers at the ends, is traditionally crafted in gold, silver, and brass, and sometimes adorned with different kinds of surface ornamentation, the most common one being Meenakari. The word “Haasli” is derived from the Hindi word “Hansuli”, which translates to “collarbone”, since the Haasli sits on the collarbones.

While we love our contemporary wedding jewellery, every once in a while, we wish to swap our regular maangtikkas with Rajasthani borlas, and round naths with Maharastrian Peshwayi naths. We also find ourselves gravitating towards traditional Haaslis over regular kinds of necklaces or chokers at the moment. If you too, are enchanted by the charm of the traditional haasli, we suggest you swap your regular chokers with a haasli this wedding season.
