Long before the aisle and the camera flashes, there’s a quieter, more intimate kind of prep happening. One where you prepare your mind and soul for the changes that are going to take place and of course, your skin.

Doing it intentionally also means following your heart. But when it comes to Indian skin, one of the most common conditions we tend to face is hyperpigmentation. And this is the case because we have more melanin.

Melanin is a pigment found in skin cells, created by melanocytes, which gives skin its colour. So we are at a greater risk of hyperpigmentation and dark spots. For example, if your acne leaves behind a stubborn mark or your skin is exhibiting signs of sun damage, such as dark spots, all of this becomes apparent because of the Indian climate.

Often, make-up can’t help banish the spots too... despite using a lot of colour correctors. If you want a smooth, brightened complexion sans fewer spots, Reshbha Munjal, Co-founder, KorinMi, touted to be India's first Korean Skin Clinic, offers a lowdown and tips to banish hyperpigmentation. Brownie points for us because if you love K-Beauty, you will enjoy incorporating these tips into your routine.

The K-Beauty Tips For Hyperpigmentation Before You Tie The Knot

Tackle Dryness

Reshbha suggests that you must take note of your biggest skin concerns, which are primarily dullness, uneven texture, or early signs of pigmentation. She adds, “The first goal should be to restore and strengthen the skin barrier using gentle, hydrating products like low-ph cleansers, essence-rich toners, and barrier-repairing creams.”

Dryness can make hyperpigmentation appear more prominent and delay the skin's natural repair process. Reshbha says, “When the skin barrier is compromised, it's more prone to inflammation, which can exacerbate dark spots and uneven tone. To counter this, hydration and nourishment are key pillars of any pigmentation care routine.”

Practice double-cleansing

Double cleansing plays a vital role in managing hyperpigmented skin, not just from a cleanliness perspective, but as the first step in creating a healthy, receptive environment for treatment products to work effectively. Reshbha says, “Pigmentation often worsens when skin is constantly exposed to environmental stressors like pollution, UV rays, and leftover sunscreen or makeup. A thorough double cleanse helps eliminate these impurities without compromising the skin barrier.”

What should your skincare routine look like?

“For a bride dealing with hyperpigmentation, it’s essential to follow a routine that focuses on both brightening and strengthening the skin barrier, ideally starting at least 4 to 6 months before the wedding. The skincare plan should begin with gentle double-cleansing, particularly at night, to ensure the skin is thoroughly cleansed without being stripped of its natural oils. This should be followed by a hydrating, alcohol-free toner and a targeted brightening serum to address dark spots and uneven skin tone,” suggests Reshbha.

A moisturiser that supports the skin barrier is crucial, as is a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher applied daily, and even indoors. Incorporating weekly exfoliation with mild acids can also help speed up skin turnover and improve texture over time.

This will also offer you a glass-like skin. Opting for an acid peel is a good idea too. Reshba says, “it is a more intensive yet gentle exfoliation that gives an instant glow with no downtime—perfect to include in your last few sessions for that radiant, glass-like finish.”

Run Down To The Final Few Weeks

In the final weeks before the wedding, the focus should shift from treating deeper concerns to maintaining calm, balanced, and radiant skin. Reshba recommends, “This is not the time for aggressive treatments—anything that causes peeling, redness, or intense exfoliation should be avoided to prevent unexpected reactions. Instead, brides should lean into treatments that enhance skin's natural glow, deeply hydrate, and create a smooth canvas for makeup”

The final week is not switching things up but reinforcing what works. Brides should focus on creating a gentle nighttime ritual that allows the skin to recharge. This includes keeping the routine minimal but effective: cleansing thoroughly, applying a trusted hydrating essence, and finishing with a soothing cream to lock everything in.

“At this point, less is more—it's not about adding new steps, but about maximising the benefits of the essentials. Consistency and hydration go hand in hand to keep the skin looking fresh, bouncy, and calm”, she adds.
