For any bride, achieving a flawless complexion is about more than just looking great—it’s about feeling confident and radiant on one of the most important days of your life. When it comes to beauty, not one-size-fits-all. After all, it is not every time that a routine comprising cleansing, toning, and moisturising will work for your skin.

Back in 1999, UK-based entrepreneur Maria Hatzistefanis noticed a gap in the beauty industry for a brand that focused on targeted solutions and with this idea in mind, she started Rodial, a brand that aimed to create products addressing specific skin concerns.

Over time, Rodial expanded into make-up, offering products designed to work alongside its skincare range. Today, Rodial has built a reputation for creating skincare and makeup that focus on both effectiveness and ease of use. Case in point: Their Dragon Blood range, that not only has an extremely dramatic and cool name but has effective regenerative properties that mimic our skin's barrier.

The brand has finally made its way officially to India with Nykaa. at the launch event, Maria shared how her experience as an ex-beauty editor helped her shape the brand's identity and introduced Rodial's signature catchy ranges to the beauty enthusiasts gathered.

In an exclusive chat with Manifest, the founder talks about her journey with the brand, the Indian beauty landscape, her tips for brides and more. Read on...

    In Conversation With Maria Hatzistefanis

Manifest: Maria, what inspired you to launch Rodial in India, and what are your expectations from Indian consumers?

Maria Hatzistefanis: I’ve had many friends from India, especially those living in London, who were huge fans of Rodial. They always asked when we'd be available in India, so I knew there was a demand here. Finding the right partner was key, and with Beaut India and a collaboration with Nykaa, Rodial created the perfect formula for a successful launch.

M: Do you think Indian skin is different from other skin types?

MH: Yes, the climate here is quite humid and hot, which requires specific skincare needs. Our ranges like Dragon’s Blood for hydration and Vitamin C for antioxidants are designed to protect skin from pollution and address the unique needs of Indian skin.

M: For brides-to-be, what would be your recommended skincare survival kit for wedding ceremonies?

MH: I’d suggest starting with our Dragon’s Blood Sculpting Gel—it’s great as a primer too, as many make-up artists like Mario Dedivanovic [celebrity MUA for Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande and founder of Make-up By Mario] use it before applying makeup. And for the perfect finishing touch, the Banana Lowlighter brightens under the eyes, giving brides that wide-eyed glow throughout their celebrations.

M: What should brides do six months before their wedding to achieve flawless skin?

MH: Start using our Vitamin C Pads twice a day. They gently exfoliate with fruit acids, helping to clear up acne and pimples, leaving your skin smooth and prepped for the big day.

M: Vitamin C is often said to irritate sensitive skin—how does Rodial handle this?

MH: We use a stabilised form of Vitamin C that’s been well-tested, with minimal reactions. However, if someone has very sensitive skin, we always recommend a patch test to ensure it’s suitable.

M: You’ve seen countless beauty trends come and go… What trends do you love, and which ones do you dislike?

MH: I’m more focused on longevity. Many brands go viral and fade, but Rodial is about timeless beauty products that stand the test of time, like our Dragon’s Blood Sculpting Gel—it's a classic, much like a little black dress in your skincare wardrobe. I also care about sustainability, so I believe less is more in beauty.

M: Rodial is known for its unique ingredients, like bee venom and snake serum—how did you discover these?

MH: The snake serum was actually the first product that put Rodial on the map. After that success, I was on a global search for the next big thing. That’s how I discovered Dragon’s Blood, a red sap from the Amazon tree. Later, I came across bee venom after learning about a facial treatment done by Gwyneth Paltrow where bees stimulate skin regeneration. We took that idea and turned it into a product that delivers real results.

M: Can you share a memorable experience about discovering Dragon’s Blood?

MH: I was on a journey to find something truly unique. Dragon’s Blood caught my attention because of its regenerative properties, much like a protective shield for the skin. Its red colour, drawn from the sap of an Amazonian tree, became the inspiration for the packaging too.

M: Tell us about the role of stem cells in Rodial’s products, especially in terms of beauty.

MH: We use a stem cell extracted from a rose plant in the Swiss Alps. This stem cell helps the plant regenerate through harsh winters. Similarly, it helps rejuvenate and renew the skin, promoting cell regeneration for healthier, younger-looking skin.

M: What beauty treatments would you recommend for brides before their wedding?

MH: Hydration is key. I’d advise against harsh treatments that strip the skin. Instead, I recommend softer, more frequent treatments like facial massages and using Rodial’s Dragon’s Blood for hydration. These work wonders in plumping the skin naturally.

M: What’s your personal beauty hack for a glowing complexion?

MH: For a quick pick-me-up, I do a mini facial: I exfoliate with Vitamin C Pads and then apply our Dragon’s Blood Hydra Mask. It’s a hydrogel sheet mask that I leave on for 45 minutes. It gives me an instant glow, like a professional facial at home.

M: How has the beauty industry evolved over the years, in your view?

MH: The trend is shifting towards less-is-more. Skincare and make-up routines are becoming shorter and more efficient. As a busy mom, I appreciate products that are multifunctional and quick to use—no more complicated 10-step regimens. Beauty should serve our lives, not take over them.

M: What are your personal favourites from Rodial’s collection?

MH: I can’t live without our Dragon’s Blood Sculpting Gel and the Banana Lowlighter—both are staples in my routine.

For Manifest to become one of Cambridge Dictionary's most viewed words of 2024 — 1,30,000 hits and counting — it means some of us must have Googled it at least once. I know, I hit that search button over and over again
because each time I looked at it, I saw a new meaning.

Putting together a homegrown title at a time when the demise of print has been long announced may seem surprising...
...but it has long been a dream of mine to give India a magazine it deserves. A magazine that is the country.

And nothing, absolutely nothing, represents India more than our weddings. It is a time when families are brought together. Traditions come alive as they are adapted to each couple's beliefs. And lives are joined in a way that the romantic in me still enjoys.
