Love is clearly in the air...
At the beginning of the year, my Instagram’s ‘Explore’ page was flooded with Reels proclaiming that 2024 was going to be a big year for ‘divine unions.’ If the Paris 2024 Olympics is anything to go by, the predictions were bang on!
From gold medalist Justin Best, a member of the U.S. men’s four-rowing team proposing to his girlfriend Lainey Duncan at the Eiffel Tower, earlier this week to Lady Gaga announcing her engagement with Michael Polansky (who’ve been together officially since 2020) during the Paris Olympics, it’s as if the City of Love is working overtime to live up to its name!
Then there was Italian Olympian Gianmarco Tamberi’s comprehensive apology letter to his wife for losing his wedding ring at the opening ceremony.
The saga of the Olympics and love continues. China’s Huang Yaqiong cinched the gold medal in badminton mixed doubles on August 2nd, and right after was proposed to by Men’s doubles player Liu Yuchen in front of the La Chapelle Arena crowd. Liu Yuchen proposed with a bouquet of flowers and a ring, while he got down on one knee, needless to say, Huang was left stunned (in the best way possible).
Argentinian handball player Pablo Simonet popped the question to his girlfriend field hockey player Maria Campoy on Wednesday, July 24, while the entire team was huddling together for a group photograph.
France’s skiff sailing team was not far behind when it came to proposals either. Sarah Steyaert and Charlotte Picon were received by their respective partners at the shore with rings to propose with.
Both Steyaert and Picon were told if they brought home gold and silver they would be engaged, and though they won the bronze medal it was evident that the the engagement was on the precipice anyway!
As the Olympics continue to wow us with the athletic prowess at display, we’ll be over here manifesting our own grand proposal story!
