  • Over the years, labels from the Northeastern states of India have been having a moment. Brands from this regional belt have been exploring and honing their potential to blend heritage textiles with contemporary silhouettes. One such brand that has caught our attention is 11 Tareng. For a 2025 bride who is looking at a versatile trousseau that not only holds a strong story but can be repurposed and worn in multiple different ways long after she has tied the knot—11 Tareng is a homegrown label, you must consider.

For the girls who founded the brand almost two years ago, Jayshree Koijam and Reena Ahanthem, the brand was born out of a deep desire to celebrate and preserve the region's rich textile heritage. Blending it with contemporary fashion—the nameTareng, meaning ‘spinning wheel’ in Meitei [ a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group and language of northeast India]. symbolises the heart of our craft.  “We also draw spiritual inspiration from the number 11:11, which we believe guides us in manifesting our dreams” adds Jayshree Koijam.

Jayshree shares that their fabric which is used make centuries-old technique is “celebrated for its natural luminous sheen that exudes understated luxury. The fabric is not only lightweight but also durable. The unique characteristic comes from the meticulous cultivation, and production of the silkworms up to the weaving of the fabric, all done by hand by the skilful weavers passing down age-old craft through the generations.”

For the brides, they craft bespoke wedding attire. “Each piece is designed keeping in mind the bride’s individuality while celebrating Manipur’s rich heritage. Drawing inspiration from the region's flora, fauna, and centuries-old bridal motifs, the intricate embroidery reflects the essence of Meitei culture.” It is like holding on to a modern heirloom because these are designed in a manner to be cherished and passed down through generations. For Manifest to become one of Cambridge Dictionary's most viewed words of 2024 — 1,30,000 hits and counting — it means some of us must have Googled it at least once. I know, I hit that search button over and over again
because each time I looked at it, I saw a new meaning.

Putting together a homegrown title at a time when the demise of print has been long announced may seem surprising...
...but it has long been a dream of mine to give India a magazine it deserves. A magazine that is the country.
