So, We Have Officially Entered the Era of 'Quiet Proposals'

Couples are opting for certainty over surprise...

A few years ago, there was a point where our feeds were filled with elaborate and extravagant proposals. Think getting proposed in a huge field filled with lavender, or one where you are proposing to your other half while skydiving. Heck, we have even seen people getting proposed to underwater and how a man in California planned a road trip proposal by spelling 'Will You Marry Me?' via GPS.

Gen Z, however, isn't vibing with the extra vibes and is willing to take away the shock when putting a ring on the finger. It's more of a mutual decision rather than a surprise.

According to a report by UK-based jewellers Diamond Factory, “In [more than] 50% of cases, partners are coming for the ride in 2025.” It also mentioned, “Couples are opting for certainty over surprise,” said the report, “ensuring the ring is a perfect reflection of personal style and preferences, whilst also being able to share the shopping experience.”

What Is the Quiet Proposal Trend All About?

In a statement to the NY Post, Ella Citron-Thompkins, an expert at the Diamond Factory, further explained Gen Z’s unconventional departure from long-standing customs.

She explained that quiet proposing is a new trend where engagements are kept intimate and private, without public displays or widespread announcements. "Instead, couples focus on a personal, low-key moment. This shift towards a more intentional and collaborative proposal process is evident in the increasing number of couples choosing a ring together."

While over half of all engagement ring shoppers in 2025 are accompanied by their partner, according to the survey, this marks a stark contrast to how many couples of previous generations went about their engagements. This suggests that for many couples, the engagement and ring purchase are viewed as a mutual decision rather than a surprise.

Interestingly, Diamonds Factory also found that 18 per cent of ring shoppers brought their parents, 11 per cent brought a sibling or friend, and just 18 per cent came in alone.

So, how are you planning to propose? Are you going to keep it hush-hush or intend to do it in an extra manner?

For Manifest to become one of Cambridge Dictionary's most viewed words of 2024 — 1,30,000 hits and counting — it means some of us must have Googled it at least once. I know, I hit that search button over and over again
because each time I looked at it, I saw a new meaning.

Putting together a homegrown title at a time when the demise of print has been long announced may seem surprising...
...but it has long been a dream of mine to give India a magazine it deserves. A magazine that is the country.
