Anissa Malhotra Jain and Armaan Jain took a couple holiday for the first time in three years, and Anissa shares how Scotland played the ideal host.

“It had been almost three years since Armaan, and I took a break—just the two of us. We were torn to leave our son and go, but it was really important for us to get some alone time. We had to attend a very dear family member’s 40th birthday in London, so we decided to take a small trip to Scotland just before. Both of us had been there when we were much younger, and there were so many things drawing us in.
We visited Edinburgh and Kelso.

We took a five-day holiday: three days in Edinburgh, and two in the Scottish countryside of Kelso. It was the perfect mix of exploration and relaxation. When it comes to travel, I’m a big planner and researcher, so we really did optimise those few days. But I always keep in mind the interests of the people I’m travelling with, to weave into the itinerary.
Interestingly, Armaan and I are both wildly different in our preferences. He’s more of a city—comfort-place kind of person, while I’m more adventurous and want to visit new places. But we have both found a middle path in how we travel. For instance, a typical day in a new city we visit would start with Armaan regimented at the gym every morning, while I take a walk around to explore the city. Then, breakfast together, a sightseeing activity, followed by lunch at a place specifically recommended to us by the locals. Finally, dinner and drinks at a lively bar or restaurant. We both love to feel the pulse of a city at the ground level!
Pro Tip: While we love being together, we are absolutely delighted to do things by ourselves as well. As it happens on trips, people may have different interests in limited amounts of time, and the idea is for everyone to feel fulfilled. So don’t shy away from being on your own as and when needed.

Edinburgh: As a major History and Art enthusiast, this was a dream for me. I’d recommend:
The Royal Mile: This iconic stretch in the Old Town runs from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. I absolutely loved exploring the streets, cobbled closes, landmark sites, and hidden gardens here.
The Edinburgh Castle: One of the oldest historical locales in Europe, it has served as a royal residence, military garrison, a fortress, et al. Taking a tour of these historic gems is definitely a must-do.

Palace of Holyroodhouse: The official residence of King Charles when he is in Scotland, it is steeped in fascinating history, too—another must-visit in my books.
Arthur’s Seat: This is the most prominent peak in Holyrood Park—an ancient extinct volcano supposed to be older than Edinburgh itself!
The Johnny Walker Experience Centre: This was, arguably, the most incredible experience for us in Edinburgh…by miles! We got to learn about the history of the brand, the process of whiskey-making, and so much more of one of the biggest prides of Scotland.
Pro Tip: When in Edinburgh, do drop by the Celtic Kilt shops—for a slice of Scottish art, crafts and collectables. And, of course, all the Harry Potter spots—the Elephant House, Greyfriars Kirkyard, Victoria Street, et al.

Kelso: After the undulating streets and alleyways of magical and mystical Edinburgh, this countryside getaway was the perfect finale. We had no plans, per say, for here, and mostly stayed in, just enjoying the property we were staying at—treating ourselves to long walks around, some amazing food…and lots of golf!
Pro Tip: One of the things we enjoyed the most, together, was playing golf here in the countryside. Armaan is an extremely sporty person. I used to play golf as a child, but this trip reignited my desire to learn. Learning something new together is a peak bonding experience—one looks forward to such moments together. And document it all. Take photos and videos. As much as you don’t feel like in the moment, they are memories for a lifetime.
In Edinburgh, we stayed at the Leonardo Royal Hotel, in the heart of the Old Town. It was just off the Royal Mile, and many of the city’s top attractions were just a short distance away, including Edinburgh Castle and the National Museum of Scotland.

For the Kelso leg of the vacation, we stayed at a gorgeous Schloss Roxburgh. Blending fascinating Scottish heritage and interiors with delicious gastronomy, complete with a whiskey library, a stunning golf course, and one of the finest spas in Scotland—this was just the right place for us…so serene and relaxing.

Chaophraya Thai Restaurant: It’s a modern yet classic rooftop restaurant in Edinburgh, over looking the mystical city and the grand Castle. Not to mention, the food is mouth watering.
Vittoria On The Bridge: This one is on George IV bridge in Edinburgh, and serves delicious, authentic Italian cuisine. Try the pizzas here.
Department Of Magic: To continue the Harry Potter obsession, at a magic potions tavern—a secret, themed bar—in Edinburgh
Schloss Roxburgh: The Kelso hotel features three restaurants, spearheaded by fantastic chefs. An incredible culinary experience, with a holistic ‘estate to plate’ philosophy.
Pro Tip: Do taste the regional fare, for a feel of this stunning country. In Edinburgh, also visit a local Scottish pub…and join in their live song sessions.
This trip, we actually made a new rule. There are so many cities that we visit regularly. It’s easy to get caught in the cycle of same-old, with activities, eateries, experiences, etc. So we’ve decided we are not going to more than one of the older places that we’ve been to before. This forces us to try new restaurants, explore new neighbourhoods, and open our horizons.
Second rule is that we must do at least two cultural activities a trip, based on each other’s interests.
• Divide responsibilities equally—and don’t interfere in the other person’s part! For us, I research the hotels, restaurants, and activities, and Armaan makes the bookings and handles everything transportation related.
• Another trick I learnt from him, which works very well, is to unpack and settle yourself into the hotel room the minute you get there. Whether it’s for one night or 10. Makes it feel like home, with all your belongings around.
• And never ask the concierge where the guests go—ask them where they do. We’ve found some incredible places this way…true hidden gems!
