From enemies to lover stories to second chance romances, this year had it all…

It’s been a great year to be a fan of romantic Chinese TV shows. Whether it’s sweeping historical dramas that transport us to beautiful places filled with intrigue or modern romances that explore the complexities of human relationships, this year had something for everyone.
Now that 2024 is slowly inching towards its finish line, we decided to cast a look back on all our favourite romantic Chinese TV shows of the year. Take a look to see if your favourite is here (Or update your watchlist if you haven’t seen these!)...

Easily one of the most popular romantic Chinese dramas of the year, this one is a must-watch for anyone who loves the genre. In the show, circumstances force a respected and successful professional snooker player to retire unexpectedly and withdraw himself from the public eye. Years later, a snowstorm puts an up-and-coming Nine-Ball player in his path who changes his life forever. The show is based on a novel of the same name by writer Mo Bao Fei Bao.

Another hit from the year, The Double follows the intriguing tale of Xue Fang Fei, the daughter of a wealthy magistrate. She is betrayed and left to die by her husband before she is rescued by Jiang Li, the daughter of the Chief Secretariat. Xue Fang Fei assumes another identity and returns to the capital to take revenge on everyone who wronged her. If you’re a fan of revenge dramas like The Glory or Marry My Husband, don’t give this a miss.

If you love your TV shows to have a strong female lead that has a solid character arc, you should definitely add this one to your watchlist. In the show, a sudden tragedy forced the men of the Hua family into exile, leaving behind the women and children to survive. Hua Zhi, the young and sheltered daughter of the family, has to step up and lead them through this hardship. In the process, she ends up winning the heart of a feared commander.

Based on the novel The Story Of Rose by Yi Shu, the story follows the journey of Huang Yimei as she navigates love, life and her career. Born into a rich family, Huang Yimei was sheltered from the world as she grew up. Her talents lead her to become a well-known artist and lead her to meet the future loves of her life.

This action and romance-filled drama is a no-brainer for fans of shows like Descendants Of The Sun, Healer and Fireworks Of My Heart. The story follows TV reporter Song Ran who finds herself in a pickle during an interview mission in a turbulent country and is rescued by explosive engineer Li Zan. While the two got closer on the journey, the demons that wait for them back home could cause a few roadblocks in their story.

The show follows the lives of a group of people, including a magazine editor, publisher, PE teacher and a lawyer, who are navigating love, life, and career while dealing with issues from their past. This one is perfect for you if you love modern romances that are filled with messy dynamics, slice-of-life moments and heartwarming relationships.

The allure of a good vampire romance will never die. This drama puts a century-old vampire and a mortal blind girl in the paths of each other. Think Twilight meets Goblin! Adapted from the novel Ru Yue by Ni Luo, the story is set in the Republican Era. Vampire Shen Zhi Heng was almost assassinated by a group of corrupt soldiers when he was rescued by a blind girl Mi Lan. Their lives become intertwined in this dangerous and chaotic world.

If you’re a fan of historical dramas that have the right amount of intrigue and romance, this one should be on your list. Prince Murong Jing He of the Great Yan Dynasty is known as the “Butcher General” after a devastating fire claimed the lives of the people in the Qingzhou district after he attacked it. Mei Lin, a survivor of the attack, vows to avenge her family by killing the Butcher General. After years of training as an assassin, she is ready to take on the mission. But are things what they seem to be? This twist-filled drama will keep you hooked throughout.

In the drama, Jin Xia is ready to give up on love when she decides to put all her money into buying an ancient mansion in a seaside town. But the gorgeous mansion is not empty as Nan Hua, a supernatural entity with powers and memory loss claims that he has been living in the house for a thousand years as he waits for his soulmate to appear. Was their meeting fated? Are they soulmates? You’ll just have to watch to find out!

We love a good second-chance romance, and this one hits all the right marks, especially because it’s set against the background of an investigative thriller. Adapted from Nina Long’s novel Dong Zhi, the story follows anaesthesiologist Lu Yan and her ex-boyfriend Detective Jiang Cheng Yi who unwittingly get caught up together in a complicated investigation into some unsettling unearthed truths from eight years ago.

This is one enemies-to-lovers drama that had us hooked this year. In the show, a female game designer unexpectedly finds herself possessed by the NPC she had created. Now she has to deal with this new reality where the game world is melding with the real world, all while working with the strict and overbearing company president Xiao Ran.

Liu Mian Tang, the first lord of Yang Shan, was a fair and just ruler until she was attacked by evil forces. She manages to escape harm when she is rescued by Cui Xing Zhou, the Prince of Huai Yang, but she wakes up with no memory of her clan. Oh, and she also thinks the prince is her husband!

For anyone who is looking for a workplace romance, this could be the one for you. In the show, Ji Xing resigns from her job at a big tech company to follow her dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. As she struggles to turn her dreams into reality in a fiercely competitive world, she has to face heartbreak, turmoil and even the possibility of a new romance.

In this enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy series, a small-time lawyer faces up against her grumpy, perfectionist boss who is leaving no stone unturned to get her to quit. Oh, and the grumpy boss is also her new roommate. This is one of the funniest and sweetest enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy series you’ll see this year.

If there’s one thing C-dramas do well, it’s combining historical dramas with mythological plotlines. This show is an adaptation of the novel Tianxia Wu Shuang by Shi Shi Lang, and follows the love story of Goddess Wu Shuang, who descends to the mortal realm, and Yuan Zhong, the high priest of the Youhu clan who has been accused of stealing an important Heavenly Realm treasure. While the Goddess was supposed to punish the priest, she realises there is more to the story than she knew and they must join hands to save the world. And if they fall in love during the process, that’s just a cherry on top of a delicious Sunday!

Former lovers reuniting and reigniting sparks has to be one of our favourite tropes in romance. In the drama, high school sweethearts Shen Xing Ruo and Luxing Yan had the perfect relationship until they had to break it off when they started University. But, years later, fate grants them another chance when the two have to reunite for a dating reality show. Sparks fly between the couple but does it mean that love is back on the table?
