Imagine finding a trick that can help you find out exactly how much your partner loves you. While it is not a scientifically proven theory, the ‘bird theory’ has recently started doing the rounds over the internet, especially on TikTok. A playful test to see if your partner really even cares, this theory is exactly what it sounds like. All you have to do is casually point out something ordinary—like a bird outside—and watch how your partner reacts.

The theory suggests that romantic partners who ignore you, roll their eyes or do not look at what you pointed at and seem annoyed might not be as invested in the relationship as you’d expect.

Also called the bird test, this trend first blew up on TikTok in October 2023 as videos featuring women testing their partners flooded the internet and even made headlines for the viral trend.

What Is The Bird Theory?

According to the trend, the trick can work with anything, but birds are considered perfect since they are very common and rarely exciting, unless you have spotted a rare species. So what you need to do is simply say, “Look, a bird,” and observe your partner. If they turn to look and maybe even act excited for you, that is believed to be a sign of attention and care. The trend took a turn when couples decided to tweak it. They started gauging their partner’s reaction when they said, “I saw a bird earlier today.”

One instance of this trend from 2023 was when TikToker @royjeebiv shared “Guess what, I saw a bird today.” Her boyfriend, who was washing the dishes, replied genuinely, “That’s super cool.” Pure husband material, right?

Another TikToker, @donnyandserenity, filmed a walk with her partner and shared—he looked at the bird, got a bit frustrated when he couldn’t see it, and then launched into a fun story about being chased by a raccoon. Playful, engaging, and full of personality.

However, the trend has once again made a comeback after TikToker @keketherealmrsjones posted a video realising her husband seemed uninterested in her. The clip, captioned “The day I realise Husband doesn’t want me!” quickly went viral, racking up over 44 million views. Many viewers read his lack of reaction as a sign he wasn’t invested in the marriage, and the couple has since reportedly separated.

While several of the netizens engaged in the fun trend, some TikTokers consider the bird theory a bit much. Several of the users left comments like, “The biggest red flag is when a person tests you,” and “Normalise not giving our significant others random tests,” reflecting the sentiment that relationships shouldn’t need quizzes to prove attention or care.
