In another episode of ‘Men misinterpreting religion to suit their needs’...

Pakistani actor Danish Taimoor might have revealed a little too much about his marriage with fellow actor and superstar Ayeza Khan on his talk show Mehfil-e-Ramazan.
Fans were delighted to see the beloved actress as a guest on a recent episode of the show. Both Ayeza and Danish spoke about their relationship and marriage. At the tail end of the episode, however, things got messy when Danish decided this was the right platform to air his thoughts about polygamy in Islam.
“Mujhe ijaazat hai 4 shaadiyon ki, main kar nahi raha hoon, woh alag baat hai (I have permission for four marriages, but I'm not doing it; that's a different matter),” he said on the national broadcast.
A few days later, Danish doubled down on his statements, dismissing the criticism of his statement as plain gossip.
“Jaisa ki maine kaha tha ki mujhe 4 shaadiyon ki ijaazat hai, lekin main kar nahi raha kyunki filhaal mujhe pyaar hai apni biwi se. Aur main aaj bhi ispar qayam hoon (As I had said, I am allowed to marry four times, but I am not doing it because right now, I love my wife. And I still stand by it.)”
He went on to add, “Maine kaha tha filhaal, kyunki mujhe nahi pata ki main yahaan se nikal kar zinda rahunga ya nahi. Main ek second ke baad mar gaya toh? Yeh jo lafz hai na ‘hamesha’, hamesha koi nahi reh sakta (I had said ‘for now’ because I didn’t know if I would step out of here and still be alive or not. What if I die in the next second? The word ‘forever’—nothing lasts forever.)”
Naturally, the disrespectful and factually incorrect comments didn’t go down well with the audience and Ayeza Khan’s fans.
While some fans of Danish Taimoor did come out to defend the actor and highlight the other things he said about Ayeza Khan, they largely missed the point of the criticism. Danish not only disrespected his wife on a public platform, but he also gave misinformation to the audience about polygamy in Islam.
As Danish Taimoor stated on the show, Islam does permit men to be married to four women. However, polygamy in Islam is a provision, not a rule, that is allowed during a time of crisis, like wartime situations. It also comes with some strict conditions.
During any war, the number of men in societies gets reduced due to casualties, leaving women widowed and children orphaned. For such situations, the Quran states that men are permitted to marry up to four women so that the widows and orphans can continue to have the possibility of family life and the right to property inheritance after the passing of their husbands or fathers.

But all this is only possible on one major condition: the requirement of justice. The Quran states that before marrying for the second time, the man must ensure that he is in a condition to provide equally for all his wives and treat them justly. If he can’t do this, he is ordered to remain married to only one wife. Pakistani actor Hamza Ali Abbasi sums it up accurately in this clip that resurfaced on X, formerly Twitter:
In a time when stereotypes and allegations of misogyny plague Islam and Muslims all around the world, the arrogant statement by Danish Taimoor is not only vile but also dangerous. Here’s hoping this incident allows people to take a more in-depth look at what these provisions actually mean before taking ill-informed statements by public figures by their word.
