11 questions to ask your wedding photographers ahead of your big day!

Picking your wedding photographer is kind of a big deal. Think long after the flowers have dried up, the cake has been eaten, and your dance floor moves have become family lore, what remains are the photos from that memorable day when you entered a brand new chapter in your life and your photos are what bring it all back.

And no pressure or anything, but your photographer is basically the person responsible for capturing one of the biggest days of your life. So yes, loving their Instagram feed is great, but there is way more to it than pretty edits and dreamy couple portraits. You want someone who gets your vibe, your story, and all those tiny moments you might miss in the chaos.

Questions Every Couple Should Ask Before Booking Their Wedding Photographer

A lovely day frolicking with Abhinay and Supriya—laughter, champagne, and a touch of old-world c (4)

    1. What’s your photography style?

Every photographer has their own thing.

Some are all about candid, blink-and-you-miss-it moments. Some go full cinematic drama with moody edits and magazine-worthy shots. Others love classic portraits with everyone smiling perfectly at the camera.

Think about what you want. Are you dreaming of natural, emotional moments or something that looks straight out of a luxury bridal campaign? Or maybe a mix of both? It helps to know before you fall in love with someone’s work. And translate your vision into words for them to understand how you want your big day to be captured.

    2. Can we see full wedding albums?

Here’s a tiny reality check for you: Instagram is the highlight reel.

Of course, photographers post their best shots there, but you need to see a full wedding gallery. Ask to look through complete albums from start to finish.

Why? Because anyone can post ten stunning photos. You want to know if they can consistently capture everything, from emotional family moments to chaotic dance floor energy and those cute little in-between moments.

    3. Have you shot weddings like ours before?

Not all weddings are the same. A cosy, intimate ceremony and a three-day big-fat Indian wedding are completely different universes.

If your wedding includes haldi chaos, baraat dancing, emotional pheras, or a packed guest list, it helps if your photographer has done this before. Someone experienced will know where the action is before it even happens.

    4. What’s included in the package?

Wedding photography packages can sometimes feel like reading terms and conditions nobody asked for.

Ask all the questions. Is a pre-wedding shoot included? How many hours of coverage? Do they cover multiple functions? Will you get albums, reels, drone shots, videography?

Basically, ask now so there are no surprises or 'that’ll cost extra' plot twists later.

    5. Will YOU be photographing our wedding?

    Sneaky, but an important question.

Sometimes the person you meet is not the person who shows up on the wedding day. Bigger studios often have teams or associate photographers.

So, ask directly. Who is coming? Will there be a second shooter? Because chemistry matters, and you want to feel comfortable with the people following you around all day.

    6. What happens if the weather acts up or the lighting is terrible?

A lovely day frolicking with Abhinay and Supriya—laughter, champagne, and a touch of old-world c

Because life loves a little drama.

Maybe it rains unexpectedly. Maybe your venue lighting is super dim. Maybe your outdoor sunset photos turn into cloudy chaos.

A good photographer will not panic. Ask how they handle tricky situations and whether they have backup equipment. The pros usually already have a Plan B, C, and D ready.

    7. How do you balance candid moments and posed photos?

Be honest about what you love.

Do you want those raw, emotional, caught-off-guard moments? Or are you someone who wants perfectly posed family portraits where everyone is actually looking at the camera for once?

Most couples want both, but it is good to tell your photographer what matters most to you.

    8. What happens if there’s an emergency?

Nobody likes thinking about worst-case scenarios, but it is worth asking.

If your photographer falls sick or there is an emergency, what is the backup plan? Do they have another trusted photographer they work with, or can they send someone to cover your big day?

It may feel awkward to ask, but in the future, you will look back, and you will thank present-you for being practical.

    9. When will we get our photos?

Because patience suddenly disappears after the wedding.

Some photographers send sneak peeks within a few days, while the full gallery could take weeks or even months. Ask for a realistic timeline beforehand so you are not texting them every other week, wondering where your wedding memories are.

    10. What kind of editing do you do?

Editing can completely change the feel of your photos.

Some photographers go for bright and airy. Others love dramatic, moody edits. Ask if they retouch photos, colour-correct images, or edit every picture. Tell them how you picture the aesthetics of your photographs and ask them if they can align it according to you.

You want photos that feel polished, not like somebody accidentally turned you into a completely different person with filters.

    11. Can we talk to past couples or read reviews?

Think of this as your mini background check.

Reviews tell you way more than pretty pictures ever can. Were they easy to work with? Did they make people feel comfortable? Were they calm during stressful moments?

Because honestly, a photographer who can deal with stressed families, late timelines, and hyper cousins while still getting amazing photos? They are the ones you need for your big day.
