Weddings may be all about the couple, but let’s be honest, no one tugs at our heartstrings quite like the father of the bride. Whether he’s holding back tears during the saat pheras, planning an over-the-top affair to please his daughter, or reluctantly letting go during the vidai, the father of the bride is a beacon of pure emotion during any wedding.

Over the years, there have been many beautiful depictions of this relationship on the big screen. From Steve Martin’s neurotic-yet-lovable meltdown in Father of the Bride to the emotional rollercoaster of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge's stern-turned-soft patriarch, these films show that behind every bride is a dad doing his best not to fall apart.

For this Father’s Day, we’ve curated a list of movies that celebrate the father-daughter moments that make us laugh and cry during any wedding ceremony. Cue up these titles for a movie night with your dad this Sunday…

Best Movies That Every Father Of The Bride Should Watch

    Father of the Bride (1991)

This classic comedy stars Steve Martin as George Banks, who leads an idyllic life with his daughter and son. His perfect life is thrown into disarray when his daughter announces that she wants to get married to her boyfriend. The hilarious movie captures all the emotions any father goes through when they’re trying to process the fact that their little girl is all grown up.

    Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)

Admittedly, this one is widely known for Raj and Simran’s love story. But there’s no denying that one of the most exhilarating cinematic moments in Bollywood is when Simran’s father, Baldev Singh, finally gives his blessings to the couple. The stern and conservative patriarch recognises that his daughter’s happiness is above everything and allows himself to bend his rigid value system a little to let her go.

    Mamma Mia (2008)

In this romantic comedy musical, bride-to-be Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) invites three of her mother’s previous lovers to her wedding to determine which one is her dad, who will walk her down the aisle. The many misadventures lead to some incredibly poignant moments, making this a must-watch. The ABBA soundtrack is a bonus.

    Why Him? (2016)

The movie follows the rocky journey Ned has to take to accept that Laird might soon become his son-in-law.

Divorced couple David (George Clooney) and Georgia (Julia Roberts) cannot stand each other. However, when they find out that their daughter is getting married to a seaweed farmer she met on a trip to Bali, the two realise they’d have to join forces to stop this from happening.
