Yami Gautam on Why Marrying Aditya Dhar the Simple Way Felt Perfect
Opening up about her intimate Himachal wedding, Yami reveals what made her bond with Aditya Dhar truly special...
Yami Gautam is clearly in her happy era, and it shows. As Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar continues to top the Box Office charts, his wife, Yami Gautam, recently had a candid conversation with Humans of Bombay, opening about how she fell in love with the director and how their relationship unfolded, leading them to the decision to get married.
The actor reflected on how their relationship was not about the grand gestures or the cinematic moments. “There was no proposal moment,” Yami revealed that their relationship blossomed quietly during the promotions of the film Uri: The Surgical Strike. “There was no ‘I am going to propose to you’ kind of moment or anything filmy. We just knew that we really wanted to get married. Our families were extremely aligned and very happy for us,” She shared with Humans of Bombay that the simplicity of their relationship was what made it more special for the couple and added that she would have chosen the same kind of wedding even if the pandemic had not happened. “I would have loved to get married the same way... just a few family members, everybody’s blessings, and nature around us,” she shared.
A Wedding Rooted in Rituals (and Real Meaning)
Talking about their hill wedding in Himachal Pradesh, Yami revealed that both she and her husband, Aditya, were clear about one thing: their wedding day was all about tradition. “We wanted to make it more about rituals than anything else. We love our traditions, our Hindu culture. Each and everything that is said at that time has a meaning.”
With a setting that felt straight out of a dream, Yami added that it felt like a blessing to them, “For me, to have the mighty deodars in the background, nature blessing us out there in the open... both of us had our hearts in those hills.”
One of the most emotional parts of the wedding for Yami was what she wore. Staying true to her roots, she chose her mother’s saree, wanting to look exactly like her mom did on her own wedding day. “My mom’s saree was always there for me,” she said.
Keeping things beautifully low-key, Yami even did her own makeup. “I did my own makeup. I thought that’s too far-fetched, but it just worked out. Surilie did my hair,” she laughed, sharing that hairstylist Surilie handled her hair. She also wore a traditional reeda dupatta and pahadi nath—treasured pieces gifted by her nani and maternal family. “My nani had kept it ever since I was born... that’s exactly how I wanted to get married. There is nothing I would change about that moment.”
On Love, Instincts, and Green Forest Energy
When it comes to relationships, Yami firmly believes in trusting your gut. “I think we women are very intuitive by nature. Your first instinct about anyone, if you go back to it, will always be correct,” she said. Her first instinct about Aditya? That he was rare. “Here’s a man who is a rarity in today’s time. That was my first instinct.”
She also recalled the small, thoughtful gestures that made her fall deeper in love, such as during the Article 370 promotions when she was pregnant, and Aditya quietly ensured she was comfortable, even getting her a pillow. “He just wanted to make sure that I was comfortable. He got me a pillow,” she shared. The internet later crowned him a ‘green forest’, and honestly, we get it.
Another sweet moment came from an anecdote her hairstylist shared from the Uri sets. She once saw Aditya offer his director’s chair to someone sitting on the floor, eating. “She said she was sitting on the floor eating, and he offered her his director’s chair. She said she has worked on so many films, and nobody does that proactively.” Yami shared.
More Than Just Two People
For Yami, marriage was never just about the couple. “It was very important that my parents felt the same amount of respect and security with Aditya,” she said, adding that the feeling was mutual. “It’s a marriage of families, not just two individuals.”
Aditya, she revealed, fit right in by simply being himself. “He wasn’t trying to be on his best behaviour. He was cooking, taking charge of what’s going to be made,” she shared, clearly fond of how naturally he blended into family life.
When Everything Clicks
Was there a defining moment when she knew? Apparently not. “There was no ‘that moment’ moment. Everything just fell in place. Everyone was loving and respectful towards one another,” Yami said.
She wrapped up with quiet gratitude and clarity. “Maybe we were fortunate. Or maybe this is life rewarding us. Or it’s the kind of person he is and the kind of person I am.”
Yami and Aditya had tied the knot in June 2024 in an intimate ceremony in Himachal Pradesh, and the couple welcomed their son, Vedavid, in the latter part of 2024.
