Inside Rohan Sachdev and Danielle Lippiello’s Love Story That Spanned Continents But Stayed Rooted In Traditions

A love story that spanned nine years and 2 continents....

  • Rohan and Danielle's wedding
    nine years and a lifetime!

Some love stories don’t start with a bang; they just kind of…happen. And for the New Jersey-based couple Rohan Sachdev and Danielle Lippiello, it began amid the holiday chaos at a high school party. It later turned into a solid friendship, and somewhere along the way, it translated into something much deeper that would span nine years and two continents. The kind of love that feels easy, familiar, and meant to be. And for Rohan and Danielle, it set a milestone.

The couple revealed, “We first met at a Christmas sweater party in 2015—classic holiday chaos, and somehow we found each other in it.”

From Awkward First Dates to Forever

Their first date had all the makings of a story they’d tell their kids and everybody else for as long as they can remember. It was equal parts awkward and adorable.

“Brunch at a spot overlooking the beach in Long Branch — which is actually where we live now. Danielle barely touched her food. I was destroying a Panini and making an embarrassing amount of noise with every bite. I also asked the waiter for cutlery, and Danielle thought, 'What 17-year-old says cutlery?' We haven’t stopped laughing since,” Rohan recollected.

It was in these small, unfiltered moments that their bond really took shape. Long drives, spontaneous plans, and quiet sunsets became the backdrop of their early love story.

“Long drives, spontaneous movie nights, Sandy Hook beach watching the sunset, and just spending endless hours together going nowhere in particular. Simple, but those are the ones we keep coming back to,” the couple recollected their favourite memory.

And somewhere along the way, they both just knew.

But what’s an interesting part of their story is how they realised their partners were the ones for them. “For Danielle, it was when I travelled to India for a wedding — being apart that long, and seeing the photos and videos, she could picture us in that role one day. For me, it was during one of my lowest points. She didn’t flinch. Just stood right beside me. That was it,” Rohan shared.

A Proposal Straight Out of a Dream

In October 2024, what Danielle thought was just another vacation turned into something unforgettable as the proposal of her dreams marked a turning point in their lives.

“October 2024, Turks and Caicos. Danielle thought it was just a vacation. I had other plans. The first night, I set up the beach with flowers and a big sign asking her to marry me. We did a little photo shoot on the beach, then had dinner under the stars. She had no idea.”

Their relationship, built on years of friendship, naturally evolved into a partnership that felt effortless.

“We are like each other’s best friends, biggest cheerleaders, dance partners all in one person. We push each other to grow and show up fully in the good times and the hard ones. Classic partnership — with a lot of laughs along the way.”

And when it came to romance, it wasn’t about grand gestures alone but more about meaning.

“I made Danielle a video of all our memories together — from the early days through everything we’ve built — and played it at the wedding. That one hit differently.”

    Two Weddings, One Shared Vision

    RDWedd-384 (1)

When they began planning, they knew one celebration wouldn’t be enough to capture both their worlds.

“For our wedding, we had in mind two weddings and two visions. For India—a big, fat Punjabi wedding. Elegant, floral, immersive, the kind that transforms a venue into an experience. For the USA—classic black tie, clean and formal, timeless black and white.”

Their Indian wedding, hosted across DLF Aralias Golf Club and The Oberoi, Gurgaon, became the heart of their celebrations, much like a cultural bridge where Danielle’s family experienced the magic of an Indian wedding for the very first time.

“Rocky Aur Rani was a big inspiration for our Indian wedding— that blend of grandeur and emotion. Rohan’s childhood dreams of what an Indian wedding should feel like. Our planners brought it all to life — Design Atliers in India and Danielle Rothweiler Event Design in the USA.”

Choosing the venue was deeply personal.

“We flew to India with family, specifically to find the right venue. We landed at Oberoi Gurgaon. It was logistically perfect for our 60+ guests travelling from the US, the service was exceptional, and the venue space gave us the canvas we needed. Honestly, whenever Rohan travelled to India, he always stayed there and always imagined getting married there one day.”

    Style, Traditions, and Thoughtful Details

    RDWedd-505 (1)

While everything about their wedding was special for them, fashion was a key part of their big day.

“For the Indian wedding, we travelled through different parts of Delhi, sourcing everything. Rohan’s outfits were all chosen from Study by Janak. Danielle’s looks were sourced during our family shopping trip through Delhi. For the USA wedding — Danielle wore a Berta gown, and Rohan wore a custom tux.”

But beyond aesthetics, it was the rituals that carried the most meaning.

“The first look was particularly special for us. It is something that still gives us chills — two Maulis travelled with us from the USA, brought when Rohan delivered our first wedding invitation. A special Swami happened to arrive that same day, blessed us both, and gave us those threads to tie each other during the pheras on our wedding day. We still have them on today.”

They embraced every part of the experience fully.

“The full big fat Punjabi wedding experience was rooted in the traditions from our families and cultures. Every function, every ritual—all of it. And we wove Danielle into it completely, which made it that much more meaningful.”

The Moments No One Saw Coming

    RDWedd-52 (1)

Of course, no wedding is complete without a few surprises.

“Surprise dances — from Rohan’s best friends and from the girls on his family’s side, all for Danielle. No one saw them coming, and they brought the house down,” Danielle remembered the fun moments from their big day.

And then there was the kind of chaos you really can’t plan for.

“There is one behind-the-scenes moment that only we know about. We almost didn’t make it. A volcano erupted—apparently for the first time in decades—and caused a cascade of cancelled flights, delays, and deplaning chaos for all 60 of our US guests. It was absurd. But somehow everyone made it in time, and not a single event was missed. What a story.”

A Wedding That Felt Like Them

Through all the scale, the travel, and the celebration, there was one thing that remained constant. It was their focus on what truly mattered.

When asked if they would change anything, their answer was simple, “Not a thing.”

And for couples planning their own big day, their advice comes straight from experience, “Get a great wedding planner. Enjoy every single moment — it goes faster than you think. Steal quiet moments with each other when you can. And don’t leave each other’s side. You only do this once.”

Putting together a homegrown title at a time when the demise of print has been long announced may seem surprising...
