Picture this: you’ve got yourself the perfect backless lehenga for your best friend’s wedding next month, found the right bra to go with it, and picked an updo that will allow your back to show beautifully. But you’re suddenly hit with a horrifying realization: you have terrible bacne that you didn’t take into account before planning your backless outfit. This has got to be among the top three worst nightmares of a bridesmaid—you know, after—getting a stain on your outfit and no one showing up to the bridal shower. Bacne, or back acne, can single-handedly bring down your outfit and confidence. But with a few simple tricks and tricks, you can easily treat it.
What causes bacne?
Bacne is caused when the hair follicles on the back get clogged with excess sebum (oil), dead skin cells, and bacteria. This blockage leads to inflammation, thereby causing breakouts. While your bacne could be a result of genetics or hormonal changes, there are certain habits that might be contributing to your bacne without you realising. Dermatologist, Aesthetician, and Founder of Maven Esthetics, Dr Geoffrey Vaz explains, “In India’s a tropical climate like India's, intense heat and sweat left on the skin create a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Additionally, lifestyle factors like wearing tight synthetic athleisure, delayed showering after exercising, and heavy, occlusive body lotions significantly worsen pore clogging on the back.”
If you are God’s favourite child and don’t have bacne at all, it still won’t harm taking a few precautionary measures, especially as a bridesmaid. Prevention is better than cure, after all.
To prevent acne, it’s important to use products that unclog pores and exfoliate dead skin. “Look for body washes formulated with chemical exfoliants like Salicylic Acid (BHA), which penetrates deep into pores to dissolve oil, or Glycolic and Lactic Acids (AHAs) to clear surface dead skin.” states Dr. Vaz. “Benzoyl Peroxide is another stellar ingredient due to its potent antibacterial properties. For body lotions, always opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas that feature soothing or barrier-supporting ingredients, such as Niacinamide or Ceramides, rather than heavy botanical oils.” he adds.
How can we treat bacne?
According to Dr Vaz, your ideal choice of treatment for bacne will depend on the severity and the underlying cause for the same. He suggests using a benzoyl peroxide body wash to control active breakouts, and superficial chemical peels like glycolic acid or mandelic-lactic acid peels for improving post-acne pigmentation.
For prolonged active acne and severe scars however, he suggests opting for skin treatments. “In selected cases with persistent active acne, IPL combined with radiofrequency (RF) may be recommended to reduce inflammation. For patients with acne scars or textural irregularities, fractional CO₂ laser can help improve scar remodeling.” he explains.
