Whether it’s making a case for oxidised jewellery at the Dior 2025 showcase in Paris or choosing exquisite pieces from her mother’s bauble box for events like Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s wedding and the 2014 Cannes Film festival, Sonam Kapoor doesn't let her jewellery go unnoticed.

Recently, for an event, the actor wore an Anamika Khanna milk satin ensemble featuring hand-painted floral motifs and complemented her look with an overflowing cape hemmed with tassels and fringes.

The highlight of her look, however, was the necklace from Amrapali Jewels that she wore backwards, featuring a gold chain and a statement pendant at the centre with pearl tassels.

Exploring The Backlace Fashion Trend Over The Years

The earliest evidence of this fashion trend can be traced back to the 1920s-30s when Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel introduced wearing sautoirs. The word ‘sautoir’ literally translates to ‘to be worn on the back or over the shoulder’.

Though there have been endless adaptations of this vintage-inspired trend over the years, the most notable ones include Cate Blanchett wearing a golden necklace backwards with a stunning black dress at the 2000 Academy Awards ceremony and Nicole Kidman pairing a necklace featuring 7645 diamonds with her black Balenciaga gown for the 2008 Academy Awards.

Fast forward to 2025, the backlace trend could be seen making a major comeback. Be it Sabrina Carpenter wearing a necklace from Chopard’s Queen of Kalahari collection backwards along with her baby blue JW Anderson gown at the Grammy Awards or Anya Taylor-Joy flaunting a delicate Tiffany & Co. backlace for her movie's premier in Los Angeles this year.

Though this trend might seem quite avant-garde and something you might not be able to pull off, we’re here to tell you otherwise.

Here’s How You Can Style The Backlace For The Wedding Season

To let the backlace have its moment, make sure to wear your hair up or opt for shorter hairstyles. Needless to say, a backless outfit is non-negotiable. Make sure you opt for jewellery with chunky statement pieces to draw attention to the piece. Bonus Tip- If you wish to layer your necklaces while wearing one of them backwards, make sure to keep it minimal and simple at the front to let the backlace shine.

For Manifest to become one of Cambridge Dictionary's most viewed words of 2024 — 1,30,000 hits and counting — it means some of us must have Googled it at least once. I know, I hit that search button over and over again
because each time I looked at it, I saw a new meaning.

And nothing, absolutely nothing, represents India more than our weddings. It is a time when families are brought together. Traditions come alive as they are adapted to each couple's beliefs. And lives are joined in a way that the romantic in me still enjoys.
