Sonam Kapoor’s Gaurang Shah Look Is Giving Us Newfound Appreciation For Kalamkari

Historically used as a storytelling medium, the craft of Kalamkari is as rich as it is beautiful!

Sonam Kapoor stuns in a Gaurang Shah anarkali, showcasing the intricate Kalamkari craft with motifs inspired by Ajanta and Ellora paintings. The ochre and green ensemble paired with a sheer dupatta and sleek accessories highlights her love for Indian textiles, offering bridesmaids major style inspiration.

If there is someone who almost never disappoints with her Indian looks (or any, for that matter), it’s Sonam Kapoor. Her recent appearances in particular, have been delivering some major inspiration for bridesmaids. From her beautiful chikankari anarkali and heart-shaped kanautis at Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla’s 40-Year Anniversary celebration, to her balloon-pants-and-kurta look at Anshula Kapoor’s pre-wedding festivities, as vehement lovers of her style, we have been taking copious notes. Adding to this string of stunning Indian looks, she recently made an appearance in a beautiful anarkali set by Gaurang Shah.

What it was about?

The look was an extension of the Bollywood actor’s love for Indian crafts and textiles. The ochre and bottle green anarkali paid homage to the age-old craft of Kalamkari, a block-printing technique originated from Andhra Pradesh. The ancient craft of Kalamkari originally focused on telling mythological sagas like Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas, and was traditionally only done in natural vegetable dyes.

Sonam’s plain full-sleeved bodice of the anarakali stood in sharp contrast to the intricate kalamkari all over the skirt. The motifs drew inspiration from the artistry of the Ajanta and Ellora paintings, which gave the attire a lot of richness and gravitas. A closer look will reveal the beautiful motifs of women, peppered with embellishments. What made the outfit even more vibrant was the unexpected colour-combination of ochre and green. The anarakali was paired with a lightly embellished sheer dupatta, which Sonam chose to drape across her shoulders.

Make-up

For the make-up, Sonam went for dewy skin, glossy lips, barely-there blush, and a smokey eye, and she wore her hair in a sleek middle-parted bun. We’re loving how well the make-up look works for her.

She completed the look with a gold clutch, a pair of big jhumkas, and a pair of kolhapuris. We don’t know about you, but we are totally taking cue from this look and embracing rich Indian crafts this wedding season.
