The bubble lehenga offers a way to retain the romance of a lehenga while disrupting its familiar proportions. Think of it as the bridal equivalent of taking a classic and giving it a fashion-girl twist," opines designer Yash Patil of That Antiquepiece. "I wanted to reimagine the bubble skirt and give it a traditional spin, keeping the modern bride in mind. Using brocade allowed me to bring in a sense of richness and heritage while giving the silhouette a contemporary edge," he adds.
Several international brands like Jacquemus, Coperni, Robert Wun, and Miu Miu have released their own versions of the bubble skirt, and Indian designers are jumping on the bandwagon too. Seen at the recent Hyundai India Couture Week, Anamika Khanna and Roseroom explored the bubble shape with volume and construction.
Styling the bubble lehenga is all about striking the right balance. "Since the silhouette itself is dramatic and voluminous, keep the blouse relatively clean and let the lehenga shine. A sculpted corset or a sharply cut choli can offset the rounded volume beautifully. At the same time, statement earrings or a single striking necklace can add the requisite bridal grandeur without overwhelming the look. For the bride who wants to push the fashion envelope further, skip the conventional dupatta and opt for a sculptural veil, or drape one loosely over the shoulder," suggests stylist Isha Bhansali.
