Here’s how you can embrace meaningful heirloom pieces on your special days

Fashion might often be considered frivolous beneath the fast fleeting trends, flashing cameras of the paparazzi, and seemingly lack of meaningful purpose. But ever so often, we are reminded of the gravitas and purpose of fashion. That fashion is more than just pretty clothes—it can be a way of storytelling. It can carry a meaning or convey a sentiment.

At the premiere of Janhvi Kapoor’s movie Homebound, she reiterated the same. In a poignant tribute to her late mother, Janhvi Kapoor wore a beautiful royal blue Pashmina saree worn by Sridevi in 2017. The Manish Malhotra saree features Kashmiri craft, its surface enriched with gold tilla and traditional chinar motifs that root it in centuries of artistry. The saree had intricate embroidery on the pallu, a broad border in red and gold and a big embroidered motif on the back of the blouse. While she wore her mother’s saree, she paired it with a different blouse, similar to the one that Sridevi wore.
Janhvi styled her Manish Malhotra saree with jewellery from Amrapali Jewels and a cuff by Razwada Jewels. She wore her hair in a sleek bun and kept the makeup minimal. This was more than just a regular red carpet look—it was a way for Janhvi to honour her mother and take forward her legacy.

Fashion, when infused with storytelling, becomes deeply powerful. You too, can embrace a family heirloom piece on a day that’s meaningful to you. Wearing an heirloom piece as a symbol of homage towards your loved ones that transcends time—it’s evergreen.
Wearing your grandmother’s old saree at your wedding, or your grandfather’s brooch on your graduation, or a pair of earrings that belonged to your great-grandmother on a special occasion is a beautiful way to remember your loved ones on a day that’s special for you. If you are choosing to wear an heirloom garment, you can wear it as it is, or even modernise it to suit the times, while retaining the original essence of the garment. For instance, if you are wearing your grandmother’s wedding lehenga to your wedding, you can get a long trail attached to it to make it more contemporary, or pair a cool jacket with your mothers saree to make it more interesting.
