The silhouette is so unassuming, you'd love to incorporate it in your wedding wardrobes this seasonFDCI

Brides might occupy the lion’s share of wedding wardrobe shopping fun, but that doesn’t mean grooms have to settle for boring, tried-and-tested options. Menswear in India has been growing in steady and exciting ways, thanks to initiatives like the Fashion Design Council of India’s (FDCI) India Men’s Week from earlier this year and The Boys’ Club showcase at the FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week 2025.

The showcase featured the works of three up-and-coming menswear designers who should be on your radar this season. One of the labels that caught our eye was Abhishek Roy’s pret label, Roy Calcutta.

Designer Abhisek Roy presented his new collection called ‘Nawabs of Bengal’ on the runway. If you recall, the Calcutta-based designer rose to prominence when he collaborated with Saif Ali Khan for a collection of dhotis during Diwali last year. For the actor, Roy designed a classic  Mayur Puchha Dhoti,  a traditional Bengali pant-style dhoti characterised by its intense micro-pleated details.

This time around, he presented an impressive array of designs featuring elements inspired by the time of the Nawabs. The show opened with Indian tennis player Leander Paes strutting down the runway in an Angrakha kurta with hand-embroidered zardosi paired with a shawl and a gold brocade dhoti.

The collection was filled with deep velvets and intricate surface workFDCI

We saw a lot of deep hues in velvets. There were kurtas and bandhgala jackets with intricately woven zardozi and jamdani florals. While there were deeper hues, we also witnessed a lot of orange, purple, and reds, synonymous with the wedding season. We also noticed sequinwork alongside mirrorwork–perfect for anyone who wants to stand out in style

Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee ended the show in a black velvet cropped jacket with gold

detailing, black kurta and matching Bengali style dhoti.

Through this showcase, the designer made a strong case for considering dhotis for your wedding wardrobe this season, whether you’re a groom or a wedding guest. After all, comfort is the defining hallmark of this silhouette. The silhouette, despite being made of any fabric, ensures comfort and movement. It’s already got the stamp of approval from some of the most stylish men in India, from Ranveer Singh to Shah Rukh Khan.

Would you give the dhoti a chance this season?
