The butterfly haircut from the '90s is back! We've got experts to breakdown how you can rock the do in 2025Instagram

In today’s edition of ‘trends are cyclical’, we’re seeing a resurgence of the iconic butterfly haircut from the ‘90s. A staple in popular shows of the era (think Friends and Baywatch), the butterfly haircut is slowly becoming the haircut of Summer 2025, and we’re here for it. Influencers and celebrities like Matilda Djerf and Sydney Sweeney first drew attention to the haircut with their signature voluminous, bouncy layers.

Everything To Know About The Butterfly Haircut Trend

    What is a butterfly haircut?

The butterfly haircut is a soft, layered haircut that allows you to keep your hair length, all while giving you the capacity to blow-dry it and give it a whole lotta volume. It resembles the iconic Victoria’s Secret Bombshell hairstyle to a certain extent and aims to frame the face in a way that brings out your features. Like the name suggests, it’s meant to emulate the fluttering wings of a butterfly with all its layers.

Who should get the butterfly haircut?

The butterfly haircut is for those who are primarily looking to add volume to their hair. It’s not, however, a one-style-fits-all kinda hairstyle “Most people who ask for the Butterfly Haircut are those who have fine-stranded hair. And, it serves them, because the cut adds volume to the hair for sure,” shares with us Sahib Mongia, hair stylist at Noir Salon, The Chanakya, Delhi.

Your facial landscape also plays an important role in deciding whether you should try the hairstyle or not. “Those who have a broad, or wide facial landscape, should probably stay away from the Butterfly Haircut, as the layers are the most voluminous around the face, and that may add more weight to the face,” says celebrity hair stylist Clarabelle Saldanha.

Additionally, people who have oval, heart or square faces can really thrive with this haircut, as it can highlight their facial structure in the best way possible. “It (the Butterfly Haircut)  truly shines on oval, heart, and square face shapes. The shorter layers add lift to elongate the face, making it a dream for heart-shaped and oval faces. For square face shapes, the soft movement helps soften strong jawlines. Even if you have a round face, the right length and styling can create an elongating effect. It’s all about customizing the shortest layers to sit where they complement your features best,” says Sneha J. Jhaveri, hair expert and founder of Vous Salon.

What to ask for at the salon to get a butterfly haircut?

When it comes to talking to your hairstylist and asking for the butterfly haircut, Clarabelle Saldanha shares how you can explain it in the clearest way possible. “Ask for layers framing the face, specifically layers from the forehead down.”

“Make sure you ask for shallow layers, and specify you do not want deep layers. And ask for the stylist not to take away your length, or the volume at the base of the layers either. The layers have to be focused around the face and the base of the hair length.” Saldanha explains.

It is also crucial to consider how you want the haircut to look once you blow-dry or style your hair. “Describe it as soft, cascading layers that create volume and movement. Ask your stylist for shorter face-framing layers blended into longer layers. If you love a good blowout, let them know you’d like layers that flow beautifully when styled. It helps to bring inspiration pictures (Instagram, Pinterest are great for this) and discuss how much length you’re comfortable losing, so the cut is tailored to your face and lifestyle,” says Sneha J. Jhaveri.

What Are Other Ways You Can Make The Butterfly Hairstyle Pop?

Sahib Mongia, of Noir Salon, explains that certain colouring techniques can really enhance the haircut and style. “Baby lights or a balayage look great with a butterfly haircut. It adds separation, volume, dimension and movement to the hair.”

As we researched a little more, we found that colours and tones such as cherry reds or coppers may also make you feel super confident with the viral haircut.

How Can Brides Or Wedding Guests Work With It?

“For brides, the butterfly cut works beautifully in half-up, half-down hairstyles, where the shorter layers can frame the face while the longer sections cascade in soft waves. A voluminous, textured ponytail is also a stunning option—it keeps hair off the face while still showcasing the movement of the layers. If you’re opting for an updo, go for a soft, tousled bun with face-framing pieces, adding a touch of effortless glamour,” shares Sneha J. Jhaveri.

“And for wedding guests, the easiest way to style a butterfly cut is with a classic blowout or soft curls, letting the layers naturally fall into place. If you want something more polished, a chic, low bun with loose tendrils or a high, bouncy ponytail can add instant sophistication. To elevate any look, accessorize with pearl pins or delicate floral accents!” she adds!

The butterfly haircut is for all those who enjoy volume in their hair and love to get polished and soft blowouts. We’re sure it’s the haircut for spring and summer time, whether you want to pair it with a sundress or a colourful wedding outfit, it promises a glamorous and graceful look all in one.
