Would You Wear A Moissanite Engagement Ring?
Though the gemstone may look like a diamond, it is very different in comparison…
Selecting an engagement ring is an incredibly important milestone. The rings you and your partner choose can often reflect the love you share for one another and the personalities you inhabit. Here’s where the moissanite gemstone can fulfil your engagement ring dreams. Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral called silicon carbide. Which is rare to find and source. And that is the reason it is usually crafted in laboratories.
Sometime back in 2023, influencers Zahné’s (@zzzahneee) and Ella Parr-Tierney (@ellaparrtierney) popularised the discourse around ethical wedding jewellery as they opted for moissanite engagement rings.
Parallelly, a conversation surrounding Toi Et Moi engagement rings was also slowly traversing the internet, as celebrities such as Emily Ratajkowski and Ariana Grande opted for the dual-jewel accessories.
You could say this led to a greater popularity of moissanites, as people began searching for two-jewel engagement rings that were ethically made and sustainable in every sense. So, join us as we wonder and figure out whether this could be an option for your wedding jewellery.

How Are Moissanites And Diamonds Different?
Diamonds are appreciated and valued for their durability and clarity, but moissanites are a relatively close match in both areas. While diamonds are a ten on the Mohs hardness scale, moissanites are usually 9.25 - 9.5 on the same. And the latter also radiates a rainbow-like reflection, and has a green or yellow tint to it, whereas diamonds are clear and bright.

Earlier this year, jewellery production manager for American label L. Priori Jewelry, Kaitlin Cavallo discussed hot takes regarding engagement rings online, and it became quite a sensation. In the viral video, Cavallo discussed moissanite and diamond as options and explained that the two are different from one another. Moissanite is not a dupe of diamond, so it’s best not to expect it to look the same. "You can see the difference between a diamond and a moissanite," she said. "Don't get a 'moissy' expecting a diamond dupe. They're completely different stones and should be treated as such!" she said in the video.
Aside from the durability, a moissanite also has greater brilliance as it measures higher on the refractive index than a diamond. So, if you’re looking for a bling that you can spot from miles away, then a moissanite is the way to go. But it is also advisable that you check with your jeweller when buying a different hued moissanite, as the colour may not last it has been treated or merely coated with colour. Make sure you know that the gemstone has been grown in the original colour from the beginning. “Moissanite comes in different shapes and sizes. It can be crafted in any choice of metal. Be it brass, silver or gold. It also reflects hints of colour and is more eco-friendly than diamonds,” shares Palak Devpura, owner of Akanni Fine Jewellery.
Celebrities such as Emma Watson, Jennifer Aniston and Iggy Azalea are known to support the gemstone for its ethical nature. And is growing in popularity quickly. So, if you, too, are looking for a jewel that has just a little more sparkle than a diamond, you know what to choose!
