What does it take to make a beautiful, heart stoppingly-meaningful wedding? Not just a resort or guest list or even a banquet that ranks five stars. While all of these matter, it's also the intangible moments—trust, timing and individuality—that go a long way.

As our series, 'Manifest Weddings 101', takes off this month we present the names that matter, decoding the business and planning of modern weddings.

In this piece, Himanshu Patel, Founder & Creative Director, Epic Stories, reveals the key strategy to making a wedding a dream come true.

His numero uno take: "For me, the biggest advice I would give couples getting married in 2026 is to be more present at their own wedding. There are more cameras, more content and more pressure to create something for social media than ever before. But your wedding is still about two people and the people they love. If you give yourself the space to actually live those moments, instead of constantly thinking about how they are being captured, the photographs will naturally become more meaningful.”

1. Choose a photographer for their perspective, not just their Instagram

Instagram will show you the best 20 photographs from a wedding. Before choosing your photographer, try to see complete wedding galleries. See how they photograph not just portraits and décor, but parents, friends, rituals, difficult lighting and all the little moments in between. You are not just hiring someone to take beautiful pictures. You are trusting someone with how you will remember one of the biggest days of your life.

2. Tell your photographer about people, not Pinterest pictures

References are helpful, but instead of giving your photographer a list of photographs to recreate, tell them about the people who matter to you. Tell them about your relationship with your parents, grandparents, siblings and closest friends. Once we understand relationships, we know where to look when something real happens.

3. Limit the number of social media content creators

Having a social media content creator is absolutely fine, but ideally have one dedicated team rather than every vendor bringing their own creator for Instagram. When too many people are shooting the same moment, it becomes difficult for photographers and filmmakers to find a clean frame or capture it from the perspective they had planned. More cameras don’t necessarily mean better coverage. At the end of the day, it is a wedding of two people, not a content set for twenty different vendors.

4. Don’t plan your wedding only for social media

Couples today see thousands of wedding images and reels before their own wedding even happens. Take inspiration, but don’t let that pressure you into recreating somebody else’s celebration. Trends will keep changing. Your relationships and emotions are what will make your wedding photographs personal. The goal shouldn’t be to make your wedding look like someone else’s Instagram. It should look and feel like you.

5. Give yourself time. It makes a huge difference

One thing we see again and again is couples trying to fit too much into their wedding timeline. Getting ready, portraits, family photographs and ceremonies all need a little breathing room. Even an additional 20 or 30 minutes can completely change the experience. When you aren’t constantly being rushed to the next thing, you relax, your family relaxes and naturally the photographs become better too.

6. Think about light before finalising your wedding timeline

Couples spend months thinking about outfits, flowers and décor, but light is equally important for photographs. Especially for an outdoor wedding, speak to your photographer before finalising your ceremony timing and setup. Where will the sun be? Which direction will you be facing? What time is sunset? Sometimes shifting a ceremony by just 30 minutes can make an enormous difference to how the entire wedding looks in photographs.

7. If you are having a destination wedding, let us see the destination

If you have travelled to a beautiful part of the world for your wedding, allow that place to become part of your story. Don’t let every photograph happen inside the hotel or ballroom. Give your photographer time to understand the architecture, landscape, streets, culture and light of the destination. Years later, those photographs should remind you not just of how you looked, but also of where this chapter of your life happened.

8. Take your portraits, but don’t turn your wedding into a photoshoot.

Beautiful portraits are important, but you don’t need to spend hours away from your own celebration trying to create them. Give your photographer enough time for portraits and then go back to your family and friends. Some of the photographs that become most valuable aren’t planned at all. They are a parent watching you from across the room, friends laughing together, or a hug that lasted a few seconds longer than expected.

9. Stop worrying about how you look in every photograph

Your photographer is already thinking about your light, angle and frame. You should be thinking about your wedding. Laugh loudly, dance, cry if you feel like crying and hug your parents properly. Don’t stop halfway through a beautiful moment because you suddenly became conscious of the camera. The more present you are, the more honest your photographs will be. Emotion will always age better than a perfect pose.

10. Remember that you are creating a family archive, not just wedding content

In 2026, photographs are often seen within hours of being taken. They are posted, shared and eventually replaced by something new on our feeds. But wedding photographs have a much longer life. Ten years later, you may look for your parents in those photographs. Twenty years later, your children may see them. So don’t only ask your photographer to make your wedding look beautiful. Give them the freedom to remember it honestly.
