In Conversation With Designer Nupur Kanoi

Manifest: Tell us about your brand and journey.

Nupur Kanoi: My journey in fashion began with a deep-seated passion for design and creativity. After graduating from NIFT, Kolkata, I began my career as a stylist and writer for Verve, a luxury lifestyle magazine. This experience allowed me to immerse myself in the world of fashion. Through my work, I understood trends, aesthetics, and the importance of storytelling through clothing. In 2006, I took a leap of faith to launch my label. In March 2012, I made my national runway debut at Lakme Fashion Week, which was a pivotal moment for me. It provided a platform to showcase my vision to a broader audience.

M: Nupur, what sets you apart from other labels present in the space currently?

NK: My brand is characterised by several unique selling propositions (USPs). First, I focus on experimental designs that push the boundaries of traditional fashion. Second, there is a strong emphasis on intricate detailing, where every piece is crafted with thorough precision. Third, I blend global inspirations with local craftsmanship, incorporating techniques like Shibori and Bandhini into modern silhouettes. Each piece can be styled in multiple ways, making them suitable for various occasions—from casual outings to formal events. Additionally, I prioritise sustainability by supporting local artisans and using eco-friendly materials whenever possible. This approach not only enhances the uniqueness of each piece but also contributes to the preservation of traditional crafts.

M: Tell us about your consumer base

NK: My consumer base includes a diverse clientele ranging from young professionals to celebrities who seek stylish yet meaningful fashion choices. Many well-known personalities have worn my designs, which has helped elevate the brand’s visibility and appeal among those looking for distinctive pieces that tell a story. Overall, my customers are trendsetters who value both aesthetics and the narrative behind each creation. My designs are worn by actors like Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Priyanka Chopra.

M: How do you serve in the wedding space?

NK: In the wedding segment, I offer a range of artistic designs tailored for brides. My collections feature vibrant colours, intricate embroidery, and luxurious fabrics such as crepe, georgette and satin. We also work with sequins, Swarovski crystals, studs, and pearls to create pieces that allow brides to express their individuality while still embracing cultural elements. Whether it’s a traditional ceremony or a modern celebration, my designs cater to diverse styles and preferences.

Manifest tip: we suggest you check out her sea green cape set from the Sitara Cocktail Collection 2024 for mehendi. Her blazer set in black from the same collection will also make for a chic pick for the reception!

M: What type of bride should come to you?

NK: The ideal bride for my label is someone who values artistry and craftsmanship in her wedding attire. She is likely modern-minded and seeks clothing that reflects her personality—something that stands out yet honours tradition. My designs appeal to brides who want to make a statement with their attire while feeling comfortable.

    Manifest Cheat Sheet

M: When should a bride getting married in March 2025 come to you?

NK: A bride who wants something customised for her special day should come at least 3 months before her big day to finalise the outfit.

M: What were some of the major wedding fashion trends that you witnessed this year?

NK: The colour Mango Orange had a big influence on wedding fashion this year, along with ivory and beige which will continue strongly in 2025 too.

M: Define a classic Nupur Kanoi guest for us during the wedding season.

NK: Someone who knows how to marry traditional and modern elements and is comfortable experimenting with silhouettes that are not typically ethnic, proudly carrying a bit of India wherever they go, be it craft or heritage. Classics with a unique modern twist are our forte.

M: Do you customise designs? If yes, how much time does it take?

NK: Yes, we do customise and it can take anything up to 2 to 3 months if it’s a heavily embroidered piece because that needs time and attention.

For Manifest to become one of Cambridge Dictionary's most viewed words of 2024 — 1,30,000 hits and counting — it means some of us must have Googled it at least once. I know, I hit that search button over and over again
because each time I looked at it, I saw a new meaning.

Putting together a homegrown title at a time when the demise of print has been long announced may seem surprising...
...but it has long been a dream of mine to give India a magazine it deserves. A magazine that is the country.

And nothing, absolutely nothing, represents India more than our weddings. It is a time when families are brought together. Traditions come alive as they are adapted to each couple's beliefs. And lives are joined in a way that the romantic in me still enjoys.
